1940s French Tin Pushalong Racing Car with Driver 1940s French Tin Pushalong Racing Car with Driver(Reference #06-1-19)
Hailing from France in the 1940s, this charmingly crude tinplate racing car captures perfectly the spirit of the period. Measuring 13.5" long, the car is painted orange and has a finely detailed diecast driver, complete with racing helmet. It is in good condition for its age, but does suffer from minor scuffing and paint loss, most noticeably to the middle top of the bonnet.

1960s Italian Alimani Tin Pushalong Coach(Reference #05-10-20)
This delightful tinplate and pushalong coach was made by Alimani of Bologna in the 1960s. It measures 3.75" long and bears the number plate BO-405. There is print missing from all four corners, but this is not unusual with these cheaply made toys, and it does not detract from the overall appeal of this small Italian toy. (*) US$30.00

1960s Italian Alimani Tin Pushalong Saloon Car 1960s Italian Alimani Tin Pushalong Saloon Car(Reference #05-10-18)
This delightful tinplate and pushalong red and cream saloon car was made by Alimani of Bologna in the 1960s. It measures 3.75" long and bears the number plate AMBO-400. There is print missing from two of the four corners underneath the front bumper, but this is not unusual with these cheaply made toys, and it does not detract from the overall appeal of this small Italian toy.

1930s French Tin Racing Car with Driver(Reference #05-9-29)
Made by Memo (Mery Gutmann) of France in the 1930s, this charming little racer measures 6" long and has all the trademarks of a racing car of the period: bonnet strap, tail-fin rear, squared-off front and elongated exhaust pipe. One of its best features is the cut out driver; printed on both sides, he is dressed in the obligatory racing suit and leather helmet so typical of the 1930s and is grasping the steering wheel firmly between both hands. Memo produced this car in two versions: with and without a wind-up motor. This example is the version without the motor. It is clearly marked with the MEMO trademark (a child's head wearing a hat inscribed with the word MEMO) and with the product number (708). In terms of condition, the car has obviously been around the racetrack a few times as the wear and tear to the wheels confirms. Apart from that, there is some marking, and scuffing to the bodywork, but the toy is in generally good condition. It certainly deserves a place in any serious collection of toy racing cars. 1950s French Moulded Plastic Racing Car with Driver 1950s French Moulded Plastic Racing Car with Driver(Reference #05-9-28)
This attractively moulded racing car is made of early plastic. If you turn it over, you can see the multi-coloured swirled pattern that is so characteristic of these early plastic toys. The racing car measures 5.5" long and is of the simple push-along type. Its shape is typical of the classic racing cars of the early 1950s. It is complete with driver, dressed in helmet and goggles, steering wheel and windscreen. The car suffers from age-related scuffing and the exhaust pipe has lost its silvering so that the original green colour shows through, but there are no other defects to report. (#) US$24.00

1920s German Printed Tinplate W/U Racing Car(Reference #8-2-46)
This delightful tinplate and wind-up racing car has absolutely no markings, but was clearly made in Germany in the 1920s. The boat-tailed shape is particularly evocative of the period, as is the styling of the radiator, bonnet, brakes, air vents and horn. The driver is clad in the obligatory leather jacket, helmet, and goggles and is hunched over the wheel in that well-known ready for the off pose. The racing car measures 4.5" long and is in full working order (but please note that a key is not provided). The lithography is in good condition, but has dulled somewhat over the years so that it now has a slightly aged appearance. The car does have one replacement tinplate wheel which has been matched to the other three by a combination of hand-painting and colour photocopying. This in no way affects the smooth running of the toy and, as the toy can only be displayed from one side, is not that serious. However, the wheel could always be upgraded if the restoration fails to please. Both sides of the toy are shown in the photographs. This racing car is an absolutely splendid example of German tin toy manufacture at its very best, and would adorn a collection either of miniature racing cars in particular or of tuppeny toys in general. 1960s Hong Kong Plastic Friction Hot Rod 1960s Hong Kong Plastic Friction Hot Rod(Reference #3-7-156a)
Made in Hong Kong in the 1960s, this 8.5 inch long plastic and friction vehicle is a very passable representation of a hot rod roadster of the period. It has a very powerful friction motor that makes the revealed engine clack back and forth against the chassis as the car goes along. This is a particularly appealing - and unusual - feature. The car is not in mint condition, as it clearly lacks the windscreen, steering wheel, and some kind of superstructure that went over the seats. To compensate for this though, it is not at all expensive. (WR) US$24.00

1940s Chad Valley Aluminium W/U Saloon(Reference #1-11-42)
Made by Chad Valley immediately after the end of WWII, this 9 inch long saloon is made of lithographed aluminium and has a fully functioning wind-up motor. The lithography is absolutely fantastic; just take a look at the silver detailing of the car, and at the passengers who are different on the two sides of the saloon - always the sign of a quality toy. In addition, the car benefits from a luggage rack, a bonnet mascot, separate headlights, a grilled radiator, and a number plate with the number A 110. In terms of condition, it's pretty good as the only minor defect to report is slight print loss and scratching. Overall, this is a beautifully shaped and lithographed toy saloon that is an excellent example of British tinplate toy manufacture at its very best. (#) US$400.00

1970s Chinese Tin and Friction Open Tourer 1970s Chinese Tin and Friction Open Tourer(Reference #4-12-188)
Made in one of the Chinese state toy factories in the 1970s, this open tourer with driver is one of the more unusual Chinese toys of this period and is not being reproduced currently. Ten inches long, it is sturdily made of tinplate and has a fully functioning friction motor that makes a whee-whee noise as the car runs along the ground. Equipped with a soft vinyl doll driver, a plastic bonnet mascot, a printed dashboard, animal print seats, and plastic wheels, the car is marked MF 135. It suffers from overall scuffing and marking, as well as some print loss to the rear seat, and discoloration to the front bumper. However, it is still in eminently displayable condition and would make an attractive addition to any collection of tinplate vehicles. (WR) US$30.00

1930s Japanese Tin W/U Streamlined Saloon(Reference #0-5-110)
Made in Japan in the pre-war period, this delightful miniature tinplate and wind-up saloon measures just 3.5" long. Marked FOREIGN on the baseplate, it is in full working order (but please note that a key is not provided). Displaying the streamlined shape that is so reminiscent of the period, it is crudely made but is, nevertheless, an attractive item. It is in playworn condition, suffering from paint loss to the roof and wheels in particular, but is still worthy of a place in any collection of pre-war Japanese automotive toys. (50 *) US$24.00

1950s UK Plastic Friction Open Tourer 1950s UK Plastic Friction Open Tourer(Reference #3-3-18)
Though unmarked, this hard plastic sports car was made in England in the 1950s. It measures just over 4" long, and is in beautiful condition, apart from some stiffness to the friction motor. We do not know what if any marque it is meant to represent, but it is nevertheless an attractive and shapely moulding. Just look at the bonnet and radiator detail, and marvel at how tactile they are. If you collect hard plastic toys, or are interested in streamlined curiosities, then you won't find many that are as nice as this. (50 *) US$24.00

1940s German Arnold Primal Tin W/U Saloon(Reference #5-11-1)
Made in the US Zone of Germany (1948-1952), this Arnold Primal two-door saloon measures 10" long, and unusually is in working order. The cable attached winding mechanism will still drive the car both forward and backwards, whilst the steering control (though "sticky") can alter the direction from straight on to the left, and back again. Both the car and composition lady driver are in good condition, apart from some slight paint chips to the bodywork and discoloration to the figure's mouth. The only other fault is that one rear light section is completely missing. The toy is extensively trademarked to both the underside of the car and the winding handle. These early forms of remote control car were very popular at the time, and are still very collectable today. (525 #) US$240.00

1960s Pressed Steel Tonka Toy Cars (3) 1960s Pressed Steel Tonka Toy Cars (3)(Reference #6-4-54)
This selection comprises three Japanese Tonka Toy cars: Wheeler Dealer, Banana Wheeler (based on a Ford Model A), and a beach buggy. The first measures 6" long, the second 4", and the third 3.5". Wheeler Dealer has a fifth wheel on a retractable undercarriage (purpose unknown); the other two cars are simple pushalongs. All three cars are in acceptable condition for their age, although the Ford probably lacks both its canopy and steering wheel. Apart from that, they suffer from minor scuffing and paint loss to the bodies (mainly concentrated on the rear sections), and the inevitable wear to the wheels. In addition, the exhaust section of the beach buggy suffers from black staining. All the decals are complete, although there is some scuffing to the edges of the Wheeler Dealer one. Together, these three vehicles would make a fine addition to any collection of vintage Tonka Toys.

1930s French Tin W/U Bumper Car with Driver(Reference #01-5-14)
Made in France in the 1930s, this painted and stencilled tinplate and wind-up dodgem or bumper car is in full working order. Wind it up (but please note that a key is not provided), and it runs along the ground on its rubber and plastic wheels at a surprisingly rapid rate. Measuring 4" in length, one of its most attractive features is its rubber-headed driver. You can still just make out the impression of a soft leather pilot's helmet and goggles. As you would expect of a car whose mission is to bump, it has suffered some paint loss over the years. However, this is not serious enough to detract from the overall appeal of this attractive and unusual toy. It would enhance any serious collection of fairground toys. (125 #) US$78.00

1940s Distler Mighty Midget Tin W/U Saloon 1940s Distler Mighty Midget Tin W/U Saloon(Reference #6-6-122)
This Mighty Midget is a small tin wind-up saloon car measuring 2½" long, in good condition, but with some minor scuffing to the sides and roof. The car is marked MADE IN US ZONE GERMANY on the boot (trunk) lid, has an on/off lever to the rear and a steering lever to the front. The car does not work, possibly because of a broken spring, and no key is supplied. This toy was made by Distler who commenced production in Nuremburg in 1900 and ceased production in 1962. (25 *) US$38.00

Price: £19.00

1970s Tin Pushalong Racing Cars (2)(Reference #05-7-10r)
Probably made in either Eastern Europe or Turkey in the 1970s, these two racing cars measure 3.5" long. Brightly lithographed and finely detailed (just look at the helmeted drivers hunched over their wheels), they are made entirely of tinplate with plastic wheels. They are in very good condition, with no defects to report. They would make an unusual addition to any collection of tinplate racing cars. (WR) US$20.00

1960s Marx Tin Friction 1930s-Style Sedan 1960s Marx Tin Friction 1930s-Style Sedan(Reference #4-7-27)
Made by Marx of the US in Hong Kong in the 1960s, this charming miniature (5" long) vehicle is a generic model of a typical 1930s American four-light sedan. Sturdily made of tinplate, the sedan is equipped with a fully functioning wind-up motor and is clearly marked with the Marx trademark on the underside. The car is attractively detailed with radiator grille, headlamps, front bumper and wheel hubs. Apart from some very small areas of print loss, this toy is in very good condition. It would make an attractive addition to any collection of tinplate vehicles or Marx toys. (100 #) US$36.00
