| | | | 1930s/1960s English Wooden Pull-along Toys (2)(Reference #5-3-116)
This selection comprises a 1930s English wooden pull-along basset hound (9" long) made by Tyne Valley Toys, together with a 1960s English wooden pull-along car (4.5" long) with bell and concentric wheels. The dog is complete with its original label that tells us that he is called Reggie. The car is unmarked. Both toys are in very reasonable condition for their age, although they do suffer from minor scuffing and paint loss.

| 1960s US Fisher Price Teddy Zilo Wooden Pull-along Toy(Reference #8-9-91) Made in the US in the 1960s by Fisher Price Toys, this Teddy Zilo wooden pull-along toy was issued under catalogue number 777. The front wheels, axle, and coloured string have been replaced, but Teddy is in pretty acceptable condition, with only minor scuffing and marking to the paper, discoloration to the xylophone, and some paint loss and pitting to the base. (WR) US$30.00

| | 1980s USSR Carved Wooden Drumming and Dancing Bears(Reference #LBC25) Toys such as this one have been made in the former Soviet Union for many decades; this one dates from the 1980s. The two carved bears are on a wooden base (5" x 3" at the widest point) and have jointed arms and/or leg. The joints are attached by string and through holes in the base to a counter-weight in the form of a wooden ball. Move the base so that the ball swings round and the bears drum and dance to their heart's content. This toy is complete and intact, without any defects to report. (WR) US$20.00

| 1880s US Bliss Paper on Wood Stable and Horse(Reference #2-5-3) Probably made by Bliss of the US in the 1880s, this lithographed paper on wood stable measures 12" x 9" x 5". It has an opening door in the upper storey, and three stalls for horses, one of which is currently occupied. The horse is 3.5" tall and is appears to be made of compressed cardboard. It lacks its tail and has lost small pieces of its outer covering, but its age and condition are in keeping with the stable. The building is in playworn but acceptable condition for its age; the lithographed paper is in particularly fine condition. The only obvious piece of restoration is that the outer pillar seems to be a replacement. Overall, both the stable and the horse have an attractive patina of age, and would look well in any collection of wooden buildings. (WR) US$170.00

| | 1930s German Wooden Carved and Painted Farm Figures(Reference #9-2-01wf) These stunningly attractive farm figures were hand-crafted and hand-painted in Germany in the 1930s. They are made of thick, solid wood, indicating that they were a quality toy in their day. A number of the larger pieces are marked FOREIGN on the back. There are 30 pieces in the collection, made up of two farmhouse buildings which fit together, an open-sided barn, three trees, three gates, a hay wagon and horse, a milkmaid and a male farm hand, four cows, two sheep, four piglets, and eight assorted fowl (cockerels, hens, ducks, chick). They range in height from 3" to under 1". As you can see from the picture, some of the pieces have been painted in rather eccentric colours, but this only adds to their somewhat primitive and folk-artsy appeal. Four of the pieces (lamb, two cows, and milkmaid) have not been completely painted, but this is not serious enough to detract from the overall appeal of this wonderfully imaginative farm toy. (WR) US$20.00

| 1930s European Hand-Carved Wooden Bird Whistle(Reference #00-3-10bw)
Probably made in Europe in the 1930s, this exquisite hand-carved wooden bird whistle is delightfully decorated and represents a red and yellow bird in full song and resting on a log. The whistle measures 6" long and is in full working order: you can still modulate the notes by placing your finger above the air-hole. This would make a delightful addition to any collection of musical toys.

| | 1950s Eastern European Wooden Figural Incense Burner(Reference #incense) Probably made in Eastern Europe in the 1950s, this wooden incense burner (5" x 5" x 2.5") comprises a delightfully carved working man smoking a pipe and sitting on a bench in front of a chimneypiece. This lifts off the wooden base to reveal the four-holed wooden and metal section where the incense is burned. The aroma of the burning incense escapes through various holes: in the base, in the top of the chimney, and in the workman's mouth; this latter one creates the illusion of smoke from the pipe. The burner is complete and intact, and only suffers from the minor paint loss associated with wooden painted figures of this period, and from burn marks to the base and top of the chimney. It would make an interesting addition to any collection of such objects. (WR) US$36.00

| 1930s Wooden Hand-Crafted Wooden Leopard Letter Rack(Reference #6-7-58) Letter racks were a popular subject for wooden handicrafts in the 1930s and this leopard letter rack undoubtedly dates from that period. Measuring 9.5" tall, the rack is hand-crafted and hand-painted in a delightfully naïve style. It has a hole in the tail so that it can be nailed to the wall in the hall, and has plenty of room (2") for a fistful of mail. It is in very good condition; there is just minor damage surrounding the nail heads at the front of the base. If either leopards or letter racks are your passion, then don't let this delightful item pass you by. (WR) US$20.00

| | Circa 1900 Hand-Carved Wooden Pullalong Horse(Reference #02-5-9x)
This beautifully hand-carved wooden pullalong horse was probably made in England in the early 1900s. Mounted on a wheeled wooden platform, he stands 13 inches high and is a tribute to the craftsmanship of the age. He has an imposing stance and you can still appreciate how finely decorated he was when new, with his painted facial features and horsehair mane. These days, he demonstrates the ravages of time only too clearly. He has numerous areas of paint loss (two of which have been badly coloured over), and he lacks his tail and harness completely. However, he is structurally sound and would make a very suitable case for sympathetic restoration.

| 1950s Wooden Child's Woodworking Plane(Reference #07-7-3x) Probably made in England in the 1950s, this toy plane was probably once part of a child's woodworking set. Measuring 5.5" long, it is sturdily made of wood in exactly the same manner as a real one, and is even equipped with a small blade. It is an attractive item which is in good condition as all it suffers from is some slight chipping. If toy woodworking tools are your passion, then this could well be the item for you. (TR) US$20.00

| | 1930s Elastolin Pullalong Wooden Horse(Reference #9-2-01vv) This extremely attractive wooden pullalong horse still has its original Elastolin label on the underneath of the base. In addition to the company's name and trademark, this also bears the legend MADE IN GERMANY and the catalogue number 19096. This dates the toy to the late 1930s. The toy measures 11" long and 10.5" tall to the tip of the ears. It is complete with its original pullalong twisted cord and wooden handle, and is in generally acceptable condition for a wooden toy of this vintage. There is, however, some slight age-related wear. Fortunately, the most serious of these - a couple of small cracks - are confined to one side of the horse. One runs upwards from the top to the bottom of the green hill representing the background; the other runs upwards from the underbelly of the horse. Apart from these, all the horse suffers from is relatively minor paint loss (predictably, this is most pronounced to all four wheels) and scuffing and chipping to the outer edge of the toy (most pronounced to one side of the muzzle (fortunately, the side of the horse with the cracks). As most of the more serious flaws are confined to one side of the toy, it would display very attractively from the other side. Overall, this is an absolutely fantastic wooden toy from one of Germany's premier toy manufacturers. (J) US$100.00

| 1930s UK Decorative Wood-Mounted Scraps (3)(Reference #3-4-424) Printed in England in the 1930s, these three scraps have been cut out and mounted on wood. In a previous life, two of them (the pensive putti and the cat) have been adapted as badges as they still have their clasps stuck to the reverse. The rose and butterfly scrap has clearly been stuck onto a cardboard sheet, possibly as part of a nursery decoration, as there are remnants of cardboard and glue on the reverse. The flower and putti scraps stand 4.5" tall; the cat measures 2" high. There are absolutely no defects to report. These are unusual decorative items that would brighten up any child's room or toy display area. (WR) US$20.00

| | 1930s UK Decorative Wood-Mounted Scraps (4)(Reference #3-4-399) Printed in England in the 1930s, these four scraps have been cut out and mounted on plywood. In a previous life, they have clearly been stuck onto a cardboard sheet, possibly as part of a nursery decoration, as there are remnants of cardboard and glue on the reverse. The scraps comprise a girl holding flowers, a single rose, a girl pilot in a rose-garlanded aeroplane, and a pensive putti. The flower girl stands 4.5" tall; the putti is the same height. Apart from some slight paper loss to the bloom of the single rose, there are no defects to report. These are unusual decorative items that would brighten up any child's room or toy display area. (WR) US$20.00

| 1930s/50s Wooden Cup and Ball Toys (3)(Reference #01-3-03m) Probably made in England in the 1930s and 1950s, these three wooden cup and ball toys range in size from 5" to 12". Designed to test your manual dexterity, the objective of these toys is to manipulate the ball on the end of the string in such a way that it drops gently into the cup on top of the stick. All three examples are beautifully made and are in very good condition without any defects. (WR) US$36.00

| | 1950s German Wooden Pullalong Horse and Cart(Reference #01-12-07b) Probably made in Germany in the 1950s, this delightful wooden pullalong toy consists of a horse on a wheeled base (6" long), and a four-wheeled cart (total length of 15"). The cart is attached to the horse by means of the looped cords on each side of the horse. The toy is in acceptable condition for its age, but does suffer from relatively minor paint loss, as well as some marking to the rear of the horse. The paint loss is most marked to all 12 wheels and to the red painted edges of both carts. Overall, though, this is a charming toy that would appeal to any collector of wooden or pullalong toys. (WR) US$38.00

| 1950s Wooden Cube and Bell Rattles(Reference #01-3-03a) Made in England in the 1950s, these beautifully crafted rattles have been carved out of single pieces of wood. The two halves of the bells are then inserted into the cubes and assembled inside (in a similar way to model ships being rigged after they have been inserted into glass bottles). The plain wood rattle is a 1.5" cube; the green painted one is a 1.75" cube. Apart from some minor paint loss and scuffing to the painted cube, both rattles are in very good condition. They would make an unusual addition to any collection of children's rattles. (WR) US$20.00

Clearly marked 'Fisher Price', the base measures 10.5" long while the cat is 4" to the tip of his tail. Apart from some slight wear to the stand, he is in very good condition. This delightful black cat is a must for any serious Fisher Price collection. (#) US$30.00
