Mr Punchs Shop : Dolls, Accessories, and Miniature Living : Dolls : Wooden Dolls

1930s German/Austrian Large Wooden Dutch Doll(Reference #9-10-02ld)
Jointed wooden dolls are usually called Dutch dolls or peg woodens. The first term may be a corruption of Deutsch, meaning German - indicting their country of origin - or a reference to the Dutch ports through which they were exported from Germany to England. The second term refers to the use of pegs in the jointing and the fact that the dolls resemble straight, old-fashioned clothes pegs. This particular example stands 11" tall and was probably made in Germany or Austria between 1925 and 1940. Her arms are jointed at the shoulders; her legs at the hips. The limbs still move as they should, although the movement was always strictly limited. The doll has crudely painted hair and facial features. In common with all her sisters, she is extremely crudely carved and assembled, but that only adds to her charm. This example does not appear to have been played with very much; the only defects to report are that there is a replacement wooden peg to the top of the left arm, and slight fading to the top of the head. However, she is still in eminently displayable condition and exhibits all the appeal of peg woodens through the years. Please note that the stand is not included. (WR) US$90.00

The second term refers to the use of pegs in the jointing and the fact that the dolls resemble straight, old-fashioned clothes pegs. This particular example stands 4" tall and was probably made in Germany or Austria between 1925 and 1940. Her arms are jointed at the shoulders; her legs at the hips. The limbs still move as they should, although the movement was always strictly limited. The doll has crudely painted hair and facial features. In common with all her sisters, she is extremely crudely carved and assembled, but that only adds to her charm. This example does not appear to have been played with very much; the only defects to report are those that existed in the original piece of wood and subsequent carving (ie minor denting to the chest and feet). There is also some fading to the facial features, and the black hair may have been re-touched slightly at some stage in the doll's life. However, she is still in eminently displayable condition and exhibits all the appeal of peg woodens through the years. (#) US$36.00
