1950s Hong Kong Boxed Tin Friction 1948 Buick Fire Car 1950s Hong Kong Boxed Tin Friction 1948 Buick Fire Car(Reference #06-2-37)
Made in Hong Kong in the 1950s on behalf of a UK toy importer, this fire chief car is based on a 1948 Buick. Complete with its original box, the car is in very good condition. The friction still works, the plastic aerial and siren are still intact, and there is just very minor paint loss to one side. The only defect to report is that the 'extra loud siren' no longer works. The original box is complete and intact, but does suffer from age-related marking and minor cardboard loss to one side. Measuring 6" long, this would make a glorious addition to any collection of either Buicks or fire chief cars. (#) US$44.00

1950s Minic Tin W/U Double Decker Bus(Reference #05-1-12)
Minic all to scale clockwork toys were first introduced by Lines Bros Ltd in 1935 and continued in production until 1971 when the range comprised mainly plastic and some steel models in various scales. The 'golden age' of tinplate Minic vehicles was in the 1930s to 1950s when they rivalled Dinky Toys in popularity, even though they were not primarily accurate models of any make of actual vehicle. This did not, however, make them any less attractive to children, who found the bright, glossy colours appealing and the clockwork motors an added bonus in play. This post-war red and cream double decker bus (60MII version) measures 7" long and 3¾" high. It has a red roof, cream and red upper deck, an all red lower deck with black half circle front mudguards, die cast wheels and black rubber tyres. It displays the 'London Transport' logotype on each side and has 'LBL 174' on the rear number plate. The destination boards read '14 Putney Sth Kensington Kings Cross'. The sides of the bus advertise 'Pedigree Prams' and 'Pedigree Dolls and Pets' whilst the back advertises 'Frog Penguin Aircraft'. The wind up motor is in perfect working order. (Please note that a key is not supplied.) The bus is in very good condition overall, with only slight damage to the transfers. There are a few spots of paint loss to the roof and to the cream sections, and a few more to the lower side body by the 'London Transport' transfer. (#) US$350.00

1960s Boxed Chinese Tinplate W/U Taxi(Reference #89-47)
Although this tinplate toy is simply marked FOREIGN, we have it on good authority that it is a vintage Chinese toy. It measures 2.75" long and is delightfully lithographed with different passengers and a toy duck hanging in the rear window. The lithography is in relatively good, clean condition, but the wind-up motor does not currently work. The taxi still has its original box, which is complete and intact, but does suffer from slight grubbiness. This could be an interesting acquisition for those of you interested either in Chinese toys or in taxi toys. (#) US$28.00

1970s Miniature Tin Friction Cable Car 1970s Miniature Tin Friction Cable Car(Reference #5-4-56b)
Made in Japan in the 1970s, this tinplate and friction cable car measures 3.5" long by 1" high and is a model of the famous San Francisco cable car invented in 1873 by Andrew Hallidie. He came up with the idea of the cable car after witnessing an accident when a horse-drawn tram slipped down one of the town's steep slopes, dragging the horses with it. His cable system was a success and by 1889 there were eight lines crossing the main areas of the town and by 1906 there were 600 cable cars in use. This car shows two of the routes that operate in San Francisco today - the Powell-Mason line which begins at Powell and Market Streets and ends at Bay Street and the Bay-Taylor line. The cable car is printed in the traditional colours of green and red and has printed passengers travelling on the side-facing seating. The cable car has a fully functioning friction motor and is in very good condition. (#) US$20.00

1950s UK Plastic Vehicles - Car, Fire Engine, Truck(Reference #3-3-82)
This selection comprises three English plastic vehicles, all of which date from the early 1950s. Although none of them is in perfect condition, they are still interesting relics of the period. The racing car is made of soft red plastic, measures 9.5" long, and is complete with all four yellow wheels. It does, however, lack both its driver and its steering wheel. The car is made by Tudor Rose, as is the fire engine. This is made of hard red plastic and measures 6.5" long. It is complete and intact and still has its two yellow plastic firemen, but does lack its ladder assembly and all four wheels. In addition, one of the axle grips is broken. The last item in the lot - the hard black plastic truck - is made by Beeju. Measuring 8" long, it is attractively moulded, and is complete and intact, apart from the rear wheels and possibly a headboard. (WR) US$20.00

1950s Tri-ang Minic Tin W/U Green Line Bus 1950s Tri-ang Minic Tin W/U Green Line Bus(Reference #04-5-77)
This attractive toy is a representation of the single-decker buses that used to run from the heart of London into the then heart of the green countryside in Surrey, hence the name GREEN LINE. These days, sadly, Green Line buses no longer run; nor is DORKING (the original destination of this toy) any longer in the countryside. It is now in the middle of prime commuter country. Measuring 7" long, the bus is sturdily made of tinplate and is fitted with a strong and fully functioning wind-up motor. Unusually, the bus is also complete with all its decals. These consist of the words GREEN LINE on each side of the bus, an attractive advertisement for BISTO GRAVY (complete with the two Bisto Kids) and the number plate LBL 174 (LBL standing for Lines Brothers Limited) on the rear, and DORKING on the destination header board on the front. The bus is also complete with interior wooden seating, tinplate radiator grille, headlamps, steering wheel, diecast wheels and rubber tyres. This Minic toy is in good condition for its age. The only slight blemishes are minor print loss to the roof and to one side where the two shades of green change; there is also minor bubbling to one of the rear mudguards, and the inevitable wear to the untreated tinplate of the radiator. Overall, though, this is a splendid example of Lines Brothers' toy-making; as such, it would enhance any collection either of Minic vehicles or of toy buses. (#) US$390.00

Post-war Tri-ang Minic Tin W/U Ambulance 75M(Reference #02-3-36)
Measuring 5" long, this Minic ambulance is sturdily made of tinplate with cast wheels and has a fully functioning wind-up motor (key not included). In addition to its five Red Cross transfers, the ambulance also has LCC (London County Council) transfers on each side and an AMBULANCE transfer on the roof. The model has two rear cut-out windows on each side, rear side-hung doors, and a locking bar to secure the doors in the closed position. The two long green wooden benches that should be fitted in the back are missing. Although the model is complete, it has suffered some wear and tear over the years. It has overall surface scuffing, wear to the rear doors where the bar has been lifted up and down over the years, and the tinplate silver-coloured radiator has slight age-related marking. There is also slight transfer loss to the small Red Cross emblems on the rear doors. However, this is still an attractive model in very acceptable condition. It would make a fine addition to any collection of Minic vehicles.

1960s Tin/Plastic B/O Yellow Taxi Cab 1960s Tin/Plastic B/O Yellow Taxi Cab(Reference #3-12-83)
Made by Yone of Japan in the 1960s for the US market, this tinplate and plastic battery-operated yellow taxi cab measures 9 inches long. Although it operates on the basis of reversing when it encounters an object (bump and go), it does have a tendency to just go round in circles if it does not meet an obstacle within a short space of time. It also has a much more complex mechanism of a meter that should clock up the fare and a door which should open as part of its cycle of operation. These latter mechanisms do not currently work. Additionally, one of the roof lights does not operate. The tinplate and other fittings are all in good condition (apart from some slight tearing of the black and white checkerboard decal on the door). This is a very good tinplate representation of a New York yellow taxi cab of this period - complete with image of passenger. And the price more than allows for the operational defects which may be reparable in more experienced hands than ours. (J) US$58.00

1980s French Plastic Citroen DS19 Fire Car 1980s French Plastic Citroen DS19 Fire Car(Reference #02-5-25)
Made in France in the 1980s, this 8" long plastic car is a very accurate model of a Citroen DS19. Decked out in the red and white colours of the fire service and with a POMPIERS decal on the bonnet, this car would fit equally well in a collection either of fire service cars or of Citroen models. The car is in very fine condition, but the decal suffers from scuffing and blurring. (75 #) US$44.00

1980s French Plastic Citroen DS19 Ambulance(Reference #02-5-23)
Made in France in the 1980s, this 8" long plastic car is a very accurate model of a Citroen DS19. Decked out in the white livery of the ambulance service and with a red cross decal on the roof, this car would fit equally well in a collection either of ambulances or of Citroen models. The car is in very fine condition, but the decal has been coloured by hand in felt tip pen and may even be a replacement.

1940s Minic Tin W/U Traffic Control Car (29M) 1940s Minic Tin W/U Traffic Control Car (29M)(Reference #01-12-34)
Made by Tri-ang as part of its Minic range in the immediate post-war period, this all tinplate and wind-up police car measures 5" long and is in full working order (but please note that a key is not supplied). Numbered 29M in the series, this is the single speaker version of the traffic control car with an 'LBL 174' rear number plate transfer and two lead uniformed policemen (made by Taylor & Barrett) inside. The car is in generally good condition. The only faults to report are some paint blistering to the bottom of the offside front door, and a small area of rust pitting to the middle of both the front and rear bumpers. The car also has some rust marking to the offside rear wheel arch. However, this is now one of the harder to find Minics especially as the loudspeaker is frequently missing and the lead police figures have often been removed by children. This example has both figures and its speaker and should therefore find a ready home in any collection of either Minics or police vehicles. (75 #) US$350.00

The vehicles are attractively printed and are in absolutely mint condition as they have never been taken out of the packet. (WR) US$20.00

1960s French Boxed Tin W/U Fire Engine 1960s French Boxed Tin W/U Fire Engine(Reference #9-7-39)
Wind up printed tinplate fire engine made by Joustra of France in the 1960s, in good condition and measuring 5½" long. The fire engine is in working order and when wound (but please note that a key is not supplied) travels forward with the concealed bell ringing. The toy is delightfully printed with firemen, hoses, oxygen cylinders, shovels, axes and a ladder and is marked 'Sapeurs Pompiers' (Firemen). The only damage to report is some rubbing to the print on the four wheel arches. The box has fared less well and is missing both end flaps and one side flap together with tearing and crushing, the major loss being to the fire engine picture. Joustra was founded in 1935 by Guillaume Marx, a former director of Bing, and their first factory was in Strasbourg-Neudorf in France. (150 #) US$120.00
