Made by SC of France in the 1920s, this set of wooden picture bricks is a very superior item indeed. Contained in its original hinged wooden box (10.75" x 2.25" x 14.25"), the set comprises 48 blocks which make up into six different pictures of children at play. The scenes illustrate the children at a fancy dress party, a game of blind man's buff in the garden, an outdoors painting lesson disrupted by a cow who has put her head through the canvas, an outing to the boating pond in the park, a visit to the village square to see a travelling circus with dancing bear, and a children's donkey derby. The bricks suffer from slight scuffing and paper loss, but are in overall very acceptable condition for their age. All of the guide pictures are present (five have been mounted on cardboard, and one is pasted to the front of the box). They suffer from some creasing, tearing and paper loss, but are also in very acceptable condition. The box suffers from some wear, as one clasp is missing, and the other one is broken, and there is a split along the back of the box. However, it still serves its original purpose of keeping the bricks all together very well. If picture bricks are your passion, then don't miss this opportunity to acquire this delightful set. | Early Dutch Boxed Wooden Picture Blocks(Reference #03-9-42)
This is an exceptionally large (15.5" x 12") and early set of boxed wooden picture blocks, dating we think from the 1800s. One of the guide pictures is inscribed with the Dutch words 'Huisselyk geluk'; these translate as 'domestic success, luck, happiness, prosperity'. The 63 blocks are in reasonable condition for their age, but do suffer from minor paper loss and wear. The six pictures show a family domestic interior, two family domestic exteriors, a plate of fruit and a parrot in a luxurious, Oriental-style setting, a group of women and children praying on the sea-shore during a storm, and a scene at an inn after a hunting expedition. The set still has four of its guide pictures; these are in exceptional condition for their age, but do suffer from minor tearing and paper loss. The wooden box is in a sorry state as both the top and the bottom have split and have been temporarily repaired, and at least half of the side edges are missing. However, it's something of a bonus that the box exists at all after all these years. (J) US$250.00
