| | | 1920s English Penny Toy Lead Charabanc(Reference #4-9-647)
This delightful 1920s miniature lead model of a charabanc (2" long) is of unknown make, but is believed to be English in origin. It represents a typical 1920s open top coach as used for outings to the seaside or a day at the races. The vehicle is in sound structural condition, but does exhibit some minor paint loss, especially to the edges.

| | 1930s Spanish Tin Six-Light Limousine Penny Toy(Reference #1-9-50) Made in Spain in the 1930s, this tinplate pushalong six-light limousine penny toy is attractively lithographed in red, black and yellow. The car has spoked wheels, and bears the registration number of M 3525. Measuring 4" long, the limousine is in very good condition: all it suffers from is slight wear to the roof. (#) US$110.00

| 1930s German Kellermann Six-Piece Penny Toy Train Set(Reference #4-12-122) Made by CKO (Georg Kellermann) of Germany in the 1930s, this delightful printed tinplate penny toy train set comprises six pieces. These are a locomotive, tender, two carriages, an oil tanker, and a goods wagon with an opening door on each side. They range in size from 2.5" to 3". Apart from minor surface scuffing, the train set is in absolutely exceptional condition for its age. If either penny toy trains or CKO toys are your passion, then this could be just the item you're looking for. (J) US$280.00

| | 1920s German Tin Penny Toy Pram with Doll(Reference #03-12-24) Although it is not marked, this penny toy pram was probably made in Germany in the 1920s. The pram is made of tinplate with a fabric-covered hood that goes up and down, and has spoked wheels, a curved handle, and embossed coachwork. The hood fabric has clearly been hand-sewn into position and it's possible that it could be a replacement. However, if this is the case, it has been extremely sympathetically done and is not at all obvious. The pram measures 3 inches in length and is equipped with a full complement of home-made linen, as well as the most delightfully dressed frozen Charlotte doll that measures just 1.5 inches long. If you're looking for a miniature pram to go with your doll's house, then here's your chance to acquire one with an occupant already in residence. (J) US$380.00

| 1900s German W/U Penny Toy Mouse in Box(Reference #2-10-22) This wind-up mouse is thought to have been made in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and is almost identical to the one illustrated in MABEL DEARMER'S BOOK OF PENNY TOYS (see illustration in David Pressland's book). The only difference is that this mouse is fur-covered (sealskin?). When wound the mouse should scuttle across the floor, with his legs frantically moving back and forth. However we have been unable to test this, as we do not have a small bore key to wind him up with. The base is detached from the body, as the toy has lost the two small pins which originally held the pieces together. These should not be too hard to replace, and in any case it does enable us to report that the mouse does not have a broken spring. The box is entirely plain, but does belong to the toy. (WR) US$40.00

| | 1920s German Tin Miniature Tractor(Reference #9-11-19aa) Although this unusual and exquisite tinplate toy tractor is not marked, it is undoubtedly German in origin. Measuring 4" long, it is the most delightful shape and features a truly wonderful driver who is a farmer from tip to toe: from his rural style bowler hat to his brown leather boots. The tinplate of the tractor is ridged to give it a more realistic look while the lithography of the engine is detailed in the extreme. In terms of condition, the tractor is pretty good for its age, but does suffer from some age-related marking and scuffing, both of the front wheels have small dents in them, and the farmer driver has a very slight crease across his shoulders. However, this toy is unusual and attractive enough to overcome these slight defects. (25 J) US$200.00

| 1930s Japanese Tin Steamship Penny Toy(Reference #6-6-76) Made in Japan in the 1930s, this 3" long tinplate steamship is equipped with wheels so that it can 'sail' across the carpet or the floor. Delightfully lithographed in red, blue and gold, it features a realistic decking effect as well as waves foaming up each side of the hull. The steamship is in very acceptable condition for its age, but does suffer from minor print loss and small areas of dry rust marking (which is perfectly stable) to both sides of the hull. It is still in eminently displayable condition and would enhance any collection of tinplate penny toys. (25 #) US$170.00

| | 1900s Penny Toy Tin Flywheel Roman Chariot(Reference #0-9-22) Probably manufactured in France circa 1900, this chariot is made of plain tin and is completely unmarked. It measures 2.25" high by 3.5" long, has a steerable rear wheel, and is driven by a lead flywheel (usually missing). When spun, the flywheel still drives the wheels. The front of the chariot has a typical Roman style raised design. There are no indications of any fittings for either a charioteer or a horse. It appears unlikely, therefore, that the toy ever had either. The chariot is in good overall condition. There are minor dry rust marks to the base and splits to one wheel inner, but this is not structurally significant. This is a very unusual tinplate penny toy and is thus worthy of consideration by any serious collector of these delightful playthings. (J) US$40.00

| 1920s Japanese Tin Penny Toy Saloon Car(Reference #2-3-79) This charming penny toy saloon car measures just over 1" long. Brightly lithographed in red, blue and yellow, it features printed passengers, a driver and a 120 numberplate. Apart from some minor marking to the wheels and the roof, it is in very good condition. Made in Japan for export to the US and Europe, penny toys such as this one competed with the grander and more luxurious tinplate penny toys from Germany. Although not to that standard, these Japanese examples have a charm all their own; a charm that is exemplified in this particular miniature motor car. (25 # ) US$70.00
