Mr Punchs Shop : Lead, Plastic and Composition Figures : Military
| | | 1940 - 1960 Britains Lead Bren Gun Carrier No 1876(Reference #9-8-02bg) Britains introduced this Bren Gun Carrier in 1940 and it remained in production until 1960. Measuring 3.5" long, it is in very reasonable condition for its age, although it does have a small dent and hole to the top. Please note that this is not fatigue-related. The carrier also lacks the driver with steering wheel, gunner with gun (this figure has been replaced with a similar but incorrect figure) and the third crew member who sits in the rear. However, given its relatively short production run, this is still a very desirable Britains military vehicle. (#) US$58.00

| | Extremely Rare 1901 Britains Territorial Army Figure(Reference #8-9-01tf) Formerly on display at the Arundel Toy Museum, this Britains hollow-cast lead figure is categorised by James Opie (the international specialist in Britains lead military figures) as being 'extremely rare'. The baseplate of the figure is inscribed '20.1.1901' and, for a figure that is now 105 years old, it is in very good condition. The rifle and paintwork are completely original. There is a small paint loss but, as the photographs show, it bears its 105 years very well indeed. (WR) US$190.00

| 1930s Composition English Seated Soldiers (2)(Reference #9-10-03se)
Made by either Elastolin or Lineol of Germany in the 1930s, these two miniature composition figures (6 cm high) represent a WWI English officer at the salute and a WWI English soldier with a whip. The officer would originally have been seated on a wheeled vehicle; the soldier would have sat on a horse. They are in very acceptable for their age, only suffering from relatively minor paint loss, some nibbling to the helmets, and minor loss of material to the soldier's left foot. The soldier lacks the metal pin that would have secured him to his horse.

| | 1930s Composition WWI Mounted Officer with Binoculars(Reference #9-10-03mo) This splendid mounted figure and horse stands 14 cm high, and is completely unmarked, but was probably made by Elastolin or Lineol of Germany in the 1930s. The figure represents a mounted WWI English officer and has a pair of binoculars slung round his neck. He is in good condition for his age, only suffering from slight paint loss. He is complete with the pin that secures him to his horse. The officer's mount is a splendid creature, but does have a crack that goes right the way round one of his front legs. He also lacks his reins. However, together, they would make an absolutely splendid addition to any collection of German composition figures. (WR) US$36.00

| 1930 Composition WWI English Mounted Officer with Sword(Reference #9-10-03so) This mounted figure and horse measure just under 14 cm high, and are completely unmarked, but was probably made by either Elastolin or Lineol of Germany in the 1930s. The figure represents a mounted WWI English officer with sword. He is in very acceptable condition for his age, only suffering from a general dulling to the paint, and a crack to the right leg. He is complete with the pin that secures him to his horse. Apart from very slight paint loss and the lack of reins, the horse is in very good condition. (WR) US$36.00

He represents a mounted WWI English officer, wears white gloves, and has a pair of binoculars slung round his neck. | 1960s French Plastic Frogmen (4) - Original Pack(Reference #02-7-01ff) Made in France in the 1960s, these plastic figures of frogmen (approximately 2.75" long) bear a passing resemblance to those produced by Lone Star of England at the same period. Beautifully moulded, they consist of a frogman with a harpoon gun, one with a wrench and a mallet, one with a knife and a treasure chest, and one with a pair of wire cutters and an underwater lantern. The figures are still complete with their original packaging of a polythene bag and header card. This informs us that the manufacturer produced cowboys, Indians, soldiers, crusaders, farm and jungle figures, but gives no indication as to the maker's name. Apart from some age-related staining to the header card, there are absolutely no defects to report. (WR) US$20.00

| Composition Figure of General Franco(Reference #9-10-03p4) This figure stands 3 inches tall, is marked indistinctly on the base and clearly represents General Franco, the Spanish wartime leader. It formed part of a collection which comprised figures dating from the 1930s and 1940s, but we do not know whether this figure is of that period or of a later date. It appears to be based on an Elastolin figure, but the original had an incorrect armband and wore white gloves. There is no armband on this figure, and the hands are bare. It is in very acceptable condition, although it does look as though the right arm might have been re-glued or replaced, and a semi-circular section of the base has been hollowed out. Whatever its date of manufacture, it is an attractively moulded figure that would enhance any collection of WWII figures. (J) US$40.00

| | 1960s UK Britains Eyes Right Marines (5)(Reference #5-6-573) These five plastic Royal Marine figures were made by Britains between 1960 and 1962, and stand just over 2.25 inches tall. Only the clarinettist is largely undamaged, and even he has some loss of plastic to the back of his tunic's collar. The other four all have broken or missing arms and rifles, although they do all have their heads, albeit that three are detached. These figures though superb, are notoriously prone to fatigue, and these unfortunately are no exception. They are offered in the condition that we found them, in the hope that they may provide a useful source of spare bits and pieces for serious collectors of the range. (WR) US$20.00

| | 1960s Timpo WWII Plastic Soldiers (5)(Reference #3-11-85) Made by Timpo of England in the 1960s as the company's answer to Britains' Swoppets, these five figures have similar interchangeable parts. Three are marked TIMPO; the other two are simply marked MADE IN ENGLAND, but were probably made by Timpo because of the style of the bases and fastenings. All five figures are in very good condition. (*) US$20.00

| 1960s Timpo UK Paratroops Plastic Figures (4)(Reference #3-11-82) Although these figures are simply marked MADE IN ENGLAND, we believe them to have been made by Timpo because of the style of the bases and fastenings. They are based on Britains' Swoppets and have similar interchangeable parts. The four figures are all in different poses and represent British paratroops of WWII. They are complete, intact, and in excellent condition. (*) US$20.00
Price: £10.00 | | |
| | 1950s Plastic English WW2 Hilco Soldiers (4)(Reference #3-11-86) Marked MADE IN ENGLAND, HILCO on their bases, these attractively moulded plastic soldiers date from the 1950s. The four figures come in different poses: throwing a grenade, kneeling and firing, an officer pointing the way forward, and running and firing. These figures are old shop stock, and are therefore in absolutely mint condition. Plastic Hilco figures are relatively rare as the company was reluctant to invest in injection moulding equipment. The company even turned down the lucrative Kelloggs' contract to supply hundreds of thousands of plastic figures for cereal packets, and went out of business in the late 1950s. (*) US$20.00

| 1950s UK Herald Mounted Household Cavalry (2)(Reference #03-1-02n) This selection comprises two plastic Household Cavalry troopers. Issued by the firm of M Zang in the early 1950s, as part of its Herald range, both soldiers have one moveable arm, and stand 3.25" tall. They are trademarked 'Herald' and 'Made in England' on the underside of the horse. There is no damage to either figure, other than loss of paint, mainly to the boots of the standard bearer. Although these soldiers had a long production run, they remain popular with collectors of all types today, probably because they are a 'classic' of their type. (*) US$20.00

| | 1950s UK Herald Mounted Household Cavalry (2)(Reference #03-1-02o) This selection comprises two plastic Household Cavalry troopers. Issued by the firm of M Zang in the early 1950s, as part of its Herald range, both soldiers have one moveable arm, and stand 3.25" tall. They are trademarked 'Herald' and 'Made in England' on the underside of the horse. There is no damage to either figure, other than loss of paint, mainly to the boots of the trumpeter. Although these soldiers had a long production run, they remain popular with collectors of all types today, probably because they are a 'classic' of their type. (*) US$20.00

| 1950s UK Cherilea Roman Legionnaires (2)(Reference #03-1-02j) This selection comprises two rare original Cherilea Roman legionnaires, each standing 2.5" tall, and in very good condition. Both plastic figures suffer from only slight paint loss, and are pretty much as new. The red painted soldier does however have a glue repair to the rear end of his spear, which is best described as fragile. Nonetheless, it is better to have the spear end glued on, than to not have it at all. Cherilea made some wonderful and different ranges of toy soldiers, and all of their output can be considered rare today. (*) US$36.00
Price: £18.00 | | |
| | 1954 Crescent Lead Mounted Bandsmen (2)(Reference #01-4-01a) Made by Crescent of England in 1954, these lead figures are a complete oddity. They are supposed to represent the Coldstream Guards, but they are mounted when the Guards are a foot regiment, and the red plumes on their bearskins are on the wrong side (left instead of right). Moreover, they have frogging on their jackets; this is also completely wrong. In spite of these inaccuracies, these soldiers are extremely attractive. They measure 3.5" tall when they are mounted on their trusty steeds. Unusually for mounted figures, they are completely detachable. They are each playing a different musical instrument and are in very good condition - with very little of the paint loss that generally afflicts lead figures of this vintage. Acquired for their play and conversational value alone, they would make a stunning addition to any serious collection of vintage toy soldiers. (WR) US$50.00

| 1930 Britains 18" Heavy Howitzer Box Lid(Reference #9-2-01ss) This is the box lid only (measuring 8.25" by 5.25") of a Britains 18" Heavy Howitzer, with an illustrated top, and full instructions on the underside. The lid label is in presentable condition, with only slight paper loss to the top edge, and the directions on the underside are undamaged. This item would make a pleasing backdrop to the toy itself, even though the label is somewhat dirty with age. (#) US$20.00

| | 1960s Italian Plastic Roman Soldiers (6)(Reference #02-7-01f) Made in Italy in the 1960s, these plastic Roman soldiers are still contained in their original packaging - a plastic-fronted cardboard backing card. The figures stand approximately 2.75" tall and are in six different poses. Apart from some slight creasing to the backing card, there are no defects to report. This is an attractive set that would enhance any collection of plastic figures. (WR) US$24.00

| 1939 Britains Lead Marching Militia Soldier(Reference #8-9-03b) This Britains militia figure, issued in 1939, and measuring just over 2" high, is in good condition. There is some paint loss to the head and face, but the most noticeable loss is to the figure's left hand. (WR) US$44.00
Price: £22.00 | | |
| | 1916 UK Fry Lead Dispatch Rider(Reference #8-9-03c) This Expeditionary Force motorcycle dispatch rider measures 2" long, and is believed to represent a Sunbeam motorcycle of the same date. It is painted in its original colours of black and gold, and is in good condition for its age. A Fry traded as the Erecto Toy Company between 1915 and 1922, and its output is therefore relatively scarce today. This is a neat little piece of early motorcycling history, which could appeal to any collectors of motorcycling memorabilia. (50 #) US$50.00
Price: £25.00 | |
| 1971 Britains Deetail WWII German Troops (5)(Reference #00-12-01a) Britains Deetail figures - plastic with a lead base - appeared for the first time in 1971. The range was made in England and initially consisted of US and German WWII infantrymen. These five figures are therefore early examples. Standing approximately 2" tall, the figures comprise a running soldier with stick grenade and rifle, an advancing soldier with sub-machine gun (with plug arm and detachable magazine), a crouching soldier with rifle, a kneeling firing soldier (with plug arm), and a case-carrying soldier (with something missing from his right hand). Apart from this minor flaw and very slight paint loss to the lead bases, all these figures are in very good condition. They are clearly marked on the base BRITAINS LTD 1971, DEETAIL, MADE IN ENGLAND. They would make an interesting addition to any collection of Britains plastic figures. (WR) US$50.00
Price: £25.00 | | |
| | 1930s Lead Army Service Corps Wagon (Khaki)(Reference #11-7-12a) Made by leading English hollow-cast lead manufacturer, William Britain, this army service corps wagon (146a) with the crew in khaki uniform was only available pre-war. It is therefore much less common than the other version with the figures in the earlier-style uniform; this was made both pre- and post-war. Measuring 7" long, the set comprises the wagon, a two-horse team, and three-man crew (one of whom is cast in one piece with the horse that he rides). The wagon and the horses are in good condition. They are complete and intact without any cracks or breaks, and both the tailgate and the swivel mechanism at the end of the shafts are fully operational. The set only suffers from the kind of minor paint loss associated with lead figures of this vintage. This is most prevalent on the necks, flanks, legs and tails of the horses. The mounted figure of the outrider is original, but has a replacement plug arm that holds a riding crop and no longer moves. Both of the seated figures are replacements that have been repainted. However, apart from having been repainted in a colour that is slightly too bright, they are close approximations of the originals. This is an unusual Britains military lead set that would enhance any collection of same. (375 #) US$240.00
