1920s Boxed Cottage Jigsaw with Whimsical Shapes 1920s Boxed Cottage Jigsaw with Whimsical Shapes(Reference #02-3-08tc)
This Art Gallery series jigsaw of a thatched cottage is still contained in its original box (7.5" x 5"). At the start of its life, it had 75 plywood and pushfit pieces, but three or four of them are now missing. However, the puzzle (9" x 7") does include some delightful whimsical shapes (triangle, shamrock, cottage loaf, jockey's hat, for example) and would be a suitable candidate for restoration. The box is complete, but suffers from fading, tearing, and scuffing. (WR) US$20.00

The jigsaw measures 9.5" x 13.5" and is in good condition overall, although it does lack two pieces, both to the upper background. It is accompanied by a colour photocopy which would facilitate restoration. The second jigsaw is a cardboard reproduction of an antique map of Argonautica. It measures 10.5" x 15", and is in acceptable condition, but does lack two pieces, and another piece is slightly damaged. Please note that neither jigsaw has its original box. (WR) US$20.00

1961 English Victory Boxed Complete Map of World Jigsaw 1961 English Victory Boxed Complete Map of World Jigsaw(Reference #05-1-17)
Made in England by G J Hayter (Victory) in 1961, this geographical puzzle of the world comprises 600 wooden interlocking pieces and measures approximately 36" x 23" when made up. The puzzle is in very good condition for its age and does not appear to have been used very much. Although it is relatively easy to assemble the continents and countries, the seas are a different matter and take some time to complete. Please note that the image on the completed puzzle is slightly different from that shown on the box lid; it's better as it has more graphics and information. The box measures 13.25" x 9.75" x 4", and is in reasonable condition for its age, although the lid has been carefully repaired with parcel tape. If you're looking for a geographical jigsaw challenge, then here's your chance. (#) US$100.00

1982 Reproduction of 1881 House That Jack Built Game(Reference #88-176a)
Published by Hutchinson in 1982, this House That Jack Built is based on an American original of 1881 manufactured by C C Shepherd of New York. It is a book, a jigsaw puzzle, and a set of cards that relate to the traditional nursery rhyme. The cards, numbered from one to ten, each correspond to a page of the book and also match part of the puzzle. Once the jigsaw puzzle has been assembled, the book will help you to identify the people on the cards, which you place in position in Jack's front yard. Apart from some slight scuffing to the corners of the box (7" x 10"), there are no defects to report as this item is old shop stock that has not been used. (WR) US$20.00

1933 Boxed British India Promotional Jigsaw 1933 Boxed British India Promotional Jigsaw(Reference #9-2-01sp)
Made by Chad Valley as a promotional item for the British India Steamship Navigation Company in 1933, this wooden and interlocking jigsaw puzzle is still in its original box (10.5" x 6.5"). The 150 pieces make up into a picture measuring 16" x 11". The picture shows TSS Matiana at anchor, with native craft in the foreground, and a castle and town in the background. The puzzle does lack two sky edge pieces, but is in otherwise very good condition, and these British India puzzles are hard to find these days. The box isn't in great shape, as it lacks two edge pieces, has been taped, and suffers from scuffing, minor paper loss, and some graffiti to the bottom of the box. However, if your collection of promotional puzzles is missing this little gem, then don't miss this opportunity. (WR) US$38.00

1840s Wooden Hand-Coloured Betts' Farm Jigsaw 1840s Wooden Hand-Coloured Betts' Farm Jigsaw(Reference #84-37)
John Betts of London was one of the leading publishers of children's games and puzzles and was active between 1827 and 1874. Farming was a topical subject at the time and Betts issued at least two farm-related puzzles. This example measures 12.5" x 22.5". Entitled BETTS'S DIAGRAM - THE FARM, it has an interlocking frame and pushfit pieces, and illustrates farming after the agricultural revolution and after the advent of steam. Note the steam threshing machine in the background. The puzzle consists of nine vignettes that show ploughing, sowing, reaping, hay making, the farmyard, the poultry yard, the stable, sheep washing, and milking. It is in remarkable condition for its age, but does lack two pieces (one from ploughing, and one from the poultry yard), as well as three lugs. Apart from that, there is just very minor paper loss and scuffing. If you'd like an early example of an interesting puzzle by one of England's premier makers, then this could well be the item for you. (WR) US$170.00

1970s UK Queen Victoria's Dolls Jigsaw(Reference #75-137)
This jigsaw was made by John Waddington in the 1970s, and is still contained in its original shrink wrapping. It has never been opened or done before, and the only slight fault is that the two bottom corners are worn, where the plastic wrapper has torn. The jigsaw measures 14.25" by 9.25" and depicts Queen Victoria's Dolls. It was issued to mark the occasion of the exhibition 'Two Hundred Years Of Jigsaw Puzzles', which was held at the Museum of London when it was housed in Kensington Palace (before it became the residence of the late Princess Diana). Full details of the dolls are printed on the backing sheet of the jigsaw, together with the original price of 6 shillings (pre-decimalization). To quote from the backing sheet: 'These small wooden dolls were dressed by the young Princess Victoria, with the help of her governess and other members of the household staff, between 1831 and 1833 while she was living at Kensington Palace'. 1930s UK Boxed Wooden Foxhunting Jigsaw 1930s UK Boxed Wooden Foxhunting Jigsaw(Reference #02-3-02f)
As the British parliament threatens to abolish - or at least curtail - this most British of pastimes, this jigsaw entitled 'In Full Cry' celebrates the full glory of foxhunting. Measuring 15" x 11", the 240-piece plywood and interlocking puzzle is complete and in very good condition. The box too is pretty special as it has a most unusual feature: a cut-away lid that enables you to view the essence of the puzzle without actually having to remove the lid. The box reveals that Welbeck of England made the puzzle, but we do not have any further information on this particular manufacturer. The box is in good condition for its age, but does suffer from age-related grubbiness and scuffing. (725 #) US$58.00

1970s Jigsaw of a Pan Am Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet 1970s Jigsaw of a Pan Am Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet(Reference #81-18)
Made by leading English jigsaw-maker Victory (G J Hayter) in the 1970s, this puzzle depicts a Pan Am Jumbo coming in to land at Heathrow Airport, London. Pan Am assured the early success of the 747 by placing a firm order for 25 of the aircraft virtually straight off the drawing board. Made of plywood, the puzzle measures 10" x 7.5", is complete with its 125 pieces (see photo) and in excellent condition. It just has minute paper loss to two pieces. The box has born the brunt of the wear and tear. Although it is intact, it does suffer from some scuffing, tearing, paper loss and sellotaping. The picture though is still splendid. This is a piece of memorabilia that would add depth to any Pan Am or Boeing 747 collection. (WR) US$20.00

1960s Noah's Ark Jigsaw (Reference #8-10-154)
This 40-piece card puzzle makes up into a delightful (5" x 8") picture of the animals disembarking from the ark under human supervision (see picture below). It is brightly coloured and the pieces are in excellent condition. It has clearly only been made up a couple of times. The box, though crudely printed, is also a visual treat. The only damage to report is slight tearing to one end of the box. (WR) US$24.00
