Mr Punchs Shop : Gollies and Golly Memorabilia

1960s English Child's Stationery with Golly Pictures(Reference #LBC77x)
On offer here is a rare survival from a 1960s childhood: a set of child's stationery complete in its original envelope. Entitled 'Toy Post: Kiddies' Very Own', the contents comprise five sheets of coloured notepaper, six coloured envelopes, a notepad, and eight stamps which feature a teddy bear, a golly, a pelican, and a duck. However, the real delight is the original envelope that is brightly printed with an image of various toys (including a great golly) all rushing to post their letters in a pillar box. The envelope suffers from minor staining and scuffing, but overall this set of children's stationery is in very acceptable condition for its age. (#) US$20.00

1930s English Cotton Golly with Embroidered Features 1930s English Cotton Golly with Embroidered Features(Reference #06-5-12)
On offer here is a relatively early golly that probably dates from 1930s England. Standing 18.5" tall, he has a woolly head of hair, embroidered facial features, black velvet evening jacket, white frilly shirt, cotton body and bow tie, and red linen trousers. He is very good condition for his age and is a very appealing character. The only minor flaw to mention is slight staining to the shirt. (#) US$78.00

1960s English Robertson's Promotional Plush Golly(Reference #06-5-11)
James Robertson of Manchester, preserve manufacturer, issued this cuddly golly (18" tall) as a promotional item in the 1960s. He has fluffy nylon synthetic plush and wears the traditional costume of blue tailcoat, red trousers, yellow waistcoat, and red bow tie. The golly has felt facial features and a rim of hair. He also has a MADE IN ENGLAND tag to his right foot. The golly is in very good condition for his age; the only slight flaw to report is the inevitable glue marking to the felt facial features.

1904 Florence and Bertha Upton Golliwog in Holland Book 1904 Florence and Bertha Upton Golliwog in Holland Book(Reference #6-4-85b)
Published in 1904 by Longmans, Green & Co of London, New York and Bombay, this children's book tells the story of what happens to Golliwogg and the four Dutch dolls when they embark upon a trip to Holland. The Uptons invented the character of the golly at the end of the 19th century, and produced a series of picture books, of which this is one. Florence drew the pictures and Bertha wrote the verses of the stories. The book measures 11.25" x 8.5" and comprises 64 pages, including 28 coloured drawing plates (of which one is a double page spread). The book is complete, with its front and back fly papers, as well as its frontispiece. The binding is also complete, although it looks as though it might have been replaced at some stage during the book's lifetime. However, the hard covers suffer from wear to all four corners, scuffing to the edges, some staining and marking, and slight cardboard loss to the golly's trousers. All of the pages are securely attached to the binding; most of them suffer from some tearing and paper loss to the edges. To prevent this from worsening, the majority of the pages have their edges taped with invisible tape. There is also minor marking and staining to some pages. However, for a child's book that is over a century old, this item is still in very acceptable condition. It is also very good value as print dealers sell the colour prints (of which there are 28) for a minimum of UK£20 (approximately US$40) each. This delightful book would enhance any collection either of golly-related memorabilia or of classic children's books. (#) US$450.00

1970s Robertson's Promotional Golly Pendant(Reference #5-12-66)
This 1" long metal golly pendant was originally a promotional item offered in the 1970s by Robertson's, preserve manufacturers of Manchester. At some stage in its life, the pendant chain broke and the original owner decided to encase it in an oval of plastic material for display purposes. Golly could probably be released from his plastic prison by means of a smart hammer blow but, in the meantime, he makes a perfectly acceptable piece of golly memorabilia. (WR) US$20.00

Extra Large 1980s English Robertson's Promotional Golly Extra Large 1980s English Robertson's Promotional Golly(Reference #01-7-7c)
This delightfully fluffy golly measures a whopping 30" in height and is clearly a representation of the James Robertson's golly that, until fairly recently, appeared on their jars of jam and marmalade. He was probably made as a promotional item and was given away to customers in exchange for tokens from the preserves and a nominal amount of money. Golly is in very good condition for his age, and still has his original three black buttons and black eye inners. The white eye circles and the red mouth, however, look like sympathetic replacements. He is, nevertheless, a very appealing golly that would enhance any collection of such characters. (WR) US$44.00

1980s Robertson's Plastic Golly Puppet(Reference #LBC51)
Golly puppets were always a rarity and this one is no exception. Given the fragility of the plastic sheet from which it is made, it's amazing that it's survived at all. Measuring 10" tall, the puppet has a clear plastic back and is a representation of the golly emblem used by James Robertson, preserve manufacturers of Manchester, England, during the 1980s. The puppet is complete and intact, without any tears to the plastic, but it does suffer from fading. (WR) US$20.00

1896 Upton Golliwogg's Bicycle Club Book 1896 Upton Golliwogg's Bicycle Club Book(Reference #04-2-3)
Published in 1896, this book tells the story of what happens when golly and his friends the Dutch dolls go on a global bicycle tour. The Uptons invented the character of the golly at the end of the 19th century, and produced a series of picture books, of which this is one. Florence drew the pictures and Bertha wrote the verses of the stories. Published by Longmans, Green & Co of London, New York, and Bombay, the book measures 11.25" x 8.5" and comprises 64 pages, including 31 coloured drawing plates. The book lacks its front and back end papers, and the final two colour plates have been sympathetically replaced by scanning original plates. These are of a slightly smaller size than the originals, but are very acceptable replacements. The binding is also complete, but the hard covers suffer from wear to all four corners, scuffing to the edges, and some scratching, marking and fading. The pages are loose, but are in very acceptable condition, with only very minor tearing. For a child's book that is over a century old, this item is in pretty remarkable condition. It is also very good value as print dealers sell the colour prints (of which there are 31) for a minimum of UK£20 (approximately US$36) each. This delightful book would enhance any collection either of golly-related memorabilia or of classic children's books. (600 *) US$390.00

1901 Upton Golliwogg's Auto-Go Cart Book(Reference #04-2-4)
Published in 1901, this book tells the story of what happens when golly and his friends the Dutch dolls get caught up in the contemporary craze for motoring. The Uptons invented the character of the golly at the end of the 19th century, and produced a series of picture books, of which this is one. Florence drew the pictures and Bertha wrote the verses of the stories. Published by Longmans, Green & Co of London, New York, and Bombay, the book measures 11.25" x 8.5" and comprises 66 pages, including 30 coloured drawing plates, of which one is a double-page spread. The book is complete, although it lacks its front and back end papers. The binding has been replaced, the front cover has been taped, the back cover is scuffed and is worn at the corners. The pages suffer from minor tearing to the edges, six have more significant tearing, one is loose, and some of the others suffer from some marking. Overall, though, for a child's book that is over a century old, this item is in pretty remarkable condition. It is also very good value as print dealers sell the colour prints (of which there are 31) for a minimum of UK£20 (approximately US$36) each. This delightful book would enhance any collection either of golly-related memorabilia or of classic children's books. (600 #) US$300.00

1900 Upton Golliwogg Polar Adventures Book 1900 Upton Golliwogg Polar Adventures Book(Reference #04-2-2)
Copyrighted in 1900, this edition of Florence and Bertha Upton's 'The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures' was inspired by the huge contemporary interest in polar exploration. In the early 1900s, there were 17 different expeditions to the North Pole from Italy, Germany, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the US. Needless to say, they all failed. The Upton ladies invented the character of the golly at the end of the 19th century, and produced a series of picture books, of which this is one. Florence drew the pictures and Bertha wrote the verses of the stories. Published by Longmans, Green & Co of London, New York, and Bombay, the book measures 11.25" x 8.5" and comprises 64 pages, including 30 coloured drawing plates, of which one is a double-page spread. The book is complete, although it lacks its front and back end papers. The binding is complete but torn, and the hard covers suffer from wear to all four corners, scuffing, staining and marking. The frontispiece lacks paper from its right-hand, top and bottom edges, has been taped, and suffers from a childhood inscription, as does the inside front cover. The pages are loose from the binding, but are still together. Overall, they are in very acceptable condition for their age: they just suffer from relatively minor tearing, taping, and marking. For a child's book that is almost a century old, this item is in pretty remarkable condition. It is also very good value as print dealers sell the colour prints (of which there are 30) for a minimum of UK£20 (approximately US$36) each. This delightful book would enhance any collection either of golly-related memorabilia or of classic children's books. (620 #) US$330.00

Large 1970s English Golly in Evening Dress(Reference #04-7-13)
This very large golly (32" tall) boasts a colourful costume and a powerful personality. He is made of cotton and has woollen dreadlocks, felt facial features, red and white striped cotton trousers, lace shirt and velvet style jacket. Apart from some slight marking to his face and body, minor wear to his hands, feet and ears, and a small hole in the shirt, he is in very fine condition. He would make an immediate impression on any existing golly collection. (WR) US$90.00

1960s Robertson's Golly Badge and Paint Book 1960s Robertson's Golly Badge and Paint Book(Reference #01-8-1z)
In the UK in the 1960s, preserve manufacturer, James Robertson, issued a wide range of promotional material (badges, brooches, figures, paper) featuring the Robertson's golly. This selection comprises 'Golly's Magic Painting Book' (4.5" x 6"), and a small tinplate badge (1" in diameter). The painting book is mint and unused; you could still use a jar of water and a clean brush to paint the shaded areas of Golly's pictures and make the colours appear. The outside back cover of the book includes spaces to stick in the paper gollies that were on all jars of Robertson's preserves and that you had to collect to send off for your promotional item. The inside back cover has the application form to claim your 'free' golly. The white badge is marked GAUNT BIRMINGHAM round the edge. It is complete with its pin on the back and is in generally good condition, but does suffer from some slight surface marking. This is an attractive selection of vintage golly memorabilia that would enhance any collection of same. (WR) US$40.00

1960s Golliwog Bagpipe Player Brooch(Reference #00-8-02a)
Made in Birmingham, England in the 1960s as a promotional item for James Robertson of Manchester - jam and marmalade manufacturer supreme, this delightful enamel brooch measures just 1.25" in height. It represents the famous Robertson's golliwog playing the bagpipes. As usual, the golly is dressed in his traditional garb of blue tailcoat and red trousers. The brooch is in good condition; it just has very slight loss of enamel to the bottom. It is complete with its pin and hook on the back; these have been welded over the maker's name and address, but you can just make out RT[V or Y] [G or C]OM, FREDERICK, B'HAM. This brooch would make a charming addition to any collection of memorabilia relating to either golliwogs or bagpipes. (#) US$44.00
