| | | 1940s English Composition Seaside Girl Doll(Reference #6-1-63a)
Made in England in the immediate post-war period, this delightful composition girl doll was sold as a cheap souvenir of a day trip to or longer holiday at the English seaside in places such as Brighton, Skegness, Blackpool, and Margate. The doll stands 7" tall, has a mohair wig, painted facial features, jointed arms, and original cotton costume. She is in good condition for her age, but does have a small paint chip to the nose, some gunge to the hair, and some marking to the composition. However, she is still a lovely reminder of days gone by at the seaside.

| | 1930s Oriental Composition and Cloth Dressed Doll(Reference #04-5-43) Although this 12" oriental doll is in far from perfect condition, it may be a useful source of spare parts for someone. The doll has a composition head with painted facial features, lower arms and hands that are also made of composition, and lower legs and feet that look as though they are made either of cork or of wood. The rest of the doll is made of soft-stuffed cloth. The back and sides of the head are cracked, as are both hands, and the left slipper lacks its gold braid edging. The rest of the doll is in pretty acceptable condition, and the embroidered clothes are a particular delight. They are slightly faded and the braid is coming loose in a couple of places, but they are very attractively decorated. (WR) US$24.00

| 1960s Italian Composition Caribinieri Policewoman Doll(Reference #5-3-172) Composition as a material for doll-making survived longer in the post-war era in Italy than in the UK and the USA, and this splendidly dressed doll appears to date from the 1960s. Standing 18" tall, she has sleep eyes, a mohair wig with plaits, and a fully jointed head and body. She is authentically - and very expensively - dressed in the uniform of the caribinieri, the Italian police force. Her uniform is made of wool felt, complete with metal buttons, epaulettes, braid, red edging, and a white bandolier. Incredibly, she still has her original hat with famous cockade, and her sword. In terms of condition, the doll is pretty good, although the felt sword loop on her right hip is broken, and there is some damage to her left hand: three fingers broken but re-glued in position; one fingertip missing. However, this is hardly serious enough to detract from the delightful appeal and appearance of this very unusual composition doll. Please note that the stand is not included. (#) US$50.00

| | 1920s Japanese Composition Dressed Doll(Reference #03-2-1a) Made in Japan in the 1920s, this delightful doll stands 4" tall. Made of moulded composition, the doll has jointed arms, painted facial features and shoes, and a printed cotton dress. She also has that typical moulded ring in her topknot, through which the original ribbon is still threaded. The doll is in completely original condition, being old shop stock. The only minor defects to report are slight looseness to the arms, and some paint loss to the red shoes. With her somewhat pouty expression, she would make a wonderful addition to any collection of composition dolls. (#) US$50.00

| 1950s Composition Oriental Fisherman Doll(Reference #5-6-531) Probably made in either China or Japan in the 1950s, this very attractive fisherman doll stands 12 inches tall. He has a cloth body with composition head with painted features, as well as composition lower arms and legs. The doll is in completely original condition and still wears his cotton costume and carries all his fishing accoutrements. His traditional top-knot and beard are particularly appealing features. The only minor defects to report are slight fading to the front of his kimono and surface crazing to the head and legs. Please note that the stand is not included with the doll. (WR) US$90.00

| | 1929 Cameo Composition/Wood 'Margie' Doll(Reference #7-5-88) Designed by Joseph Kallus, the original owner of the Cameo Doll Company, this Margie doll stands 9.5" tall. Dating from 1929, Margie has a composition head with painted facial features, and a segmented wooden body. A fan-shaped paper transfer on the back gives her name and attributes her design and copyright to Kallus. Margie stands on her own two feet and can be displayed in a number of different poses thanks to the segmentation of her limbs. She is dressed in a pair of cotton knickers; originally, she would have been undressed. In terms of condition, Margie has been subject to some wear and tear over the years. There is surface scuffing to the composition head; this is most marked on the nose, cheeks, corners of the eyes, forehead and back of the head. There is also some slight paint loss to the body; this is most noticeable round the neck, along the backs of the arms, to the right hand, and to the bottom of the body. Finally, Margie has had her left hand replaced. Although it has been attractively moulded, it is clearly a replacement. For a doll that is entering into her seventh decade though, Margie is still in very acceptable condition, having an attractive patina of age. She would make an interesting addition to any collection of wooden or composition dolls. (300 WR) US$190.00
