| | | | 1970s English Rag Doll Cut-Out Sheets (5)(Reference #LBC41) These charming cotton cut-out sheets were printed by Her Majesty's Stationery Office for the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood in the 1970s. The sheets comprise a teddy bear that is completely uncut and measures 22" x 18.5"; a WWI British soldier that has been cut and sewn along two seams (doll stands 18.5" tall); and a larger sheet (29.5" x 36") that once featured four dolls, three of which are remaining. All of the items are in good condition; the only slight defect to report is a couple of brown marks to the front of the soldier. If either rag or cut-out dolls are your passion, then don't miss this opportunity. (WR) US$20.00

| 1960s English Woollen Black Native Doll(Reference #01-5-7nd) England in the 1950s and 1960s saw a vogue for creating woollen dolls. On offer here is a particularly fine example that is almost a caricature of earlier native dolls. Made of brown wool, it has plastic eyes, embroidered facial features, and metal and plastic jewellery including a ring through the nose, earrings, and a plastic bead necklace with a miniature coin. The doll measures 6" tall and is in exceptionally fine condition without any defects to report. (WR) US$20.00

| | 1937 English Alpha Farnell King George VI Cloth Doll(Reference #04-5-3) This beautifully detailed cloth doll of King George VI (father of Queen Elizabeth II) is an item of memorabilia designed to commemorate the coronation of George VI on 12th May, 1937. It was made earlier in 1937 when Farnell added a new wing to their factory to make additional patriotic lines for the coronation. The doll stands 15" tall, and is made of felt. It boasts a finely detailed military uniform of a guards regiment, painted facial features, separately stitched fingers, jointed legs, and woodwool stuffing. The doll still has its original embroidered Alpha Farnell label on the left foot. It has obviously been exhibited at some stage in its life, as it still has a hand-written tag round its right arm, explaining who it is and where it has come from. We have not removed this, as it is interesting in its own right. However, it could easily be removed without damaging the doll. King George VI is in very good condition for his age: there is minor splitting to the toe-cap of the left shoe, slight staining to the back of his jacket, and very slight marking to the face. He may also be lacking a sword, but we have been unable to verify this. This is an exceptional doll as well as an exceptional item of royalty memorabilia. Please note that the stand is not included. | 1920s Cloth and Wooden Old Man Doll(Reference #5-3-179) This very unusual fabric doll of an old man has a charm all his own. He has a painted stockinette face with embroidered wool eyebrows and mouth, woollen hair, wire legs, wooden feet and felt clothes. He was possibly made in the 1920s in America. He stands 13" tall and is in very acceptable condition for his age. There is some wear to the back of his tailcoat, the front and back of the trousers, and to the right sleeve of his jacket (where the wire armature is poking through). There is also a stitched repair to his left hand and some paint chipping to the soles of his feet. Overall, though, this is an unusual and attractive male doll that would enhance any collection of cloth dolls. (WR) US$44.00

| | 1930s Norah Wellings' Red Indian Chief Doll(Reference #00-4-8) Norah Wellings was England's premier maker of pressed felt face dolls. This impressive 19.5" tall Red Indian Chief doll was one of her more expensive creations and is relatively difficult to acquire these days. The doll has a jointed head, mohair wig with plaits, pressed felt face with painted features, separately stitched ears, toes and fingers (always the sign of a quality doll), jointed limbs and authentically designed wool felt costume. One of the chief's most attractive features is the large metal and wooden earring that adorns his left ear. Inevitably, with a cloth doll of this vintage, there is some wear. This consists of moth holes to both the tunic and trousers, a larger hole to the back of the tunic and to the back of the right trouser leg, and two tears to the front of the right trouser leg that have been sewn together by hand. The doll also suffers from very small holes to the hands and feet, some marking to the nose, and some loss and damage to the fringing of the costume and the back of the head-dress. There is a hand-sewn seam to the front of the tunic, but this appears to be original. Overall, though, this is an absolutely splendid - and hard to find - doll in eminently displayable condition. Please note that the stand is not included. (#) US$490.00

| 1960s Felt Doll of a Naval Commodore(Reference #5-5-72) Probably made in the 1960s somewhere in Europe, this comic felt doll of a naval commodore stands 13" tall. His body is built around a wire armature and is stuffed with excelsior. His costume is made entirely of felt enlivened with braid, pins, and gold paper (all completely original). The detailing is so good, especially in relation to the facial features, that you get the distinct impression that this is a naval officer that has an eye, not to mention lecherous leanings, for the ladies. He is in very good condition. The only small defect is slight grubbiness to the white uniform; this is perhaps not surprising after a maritime career spanning forty years. He would make an unusual and appealing addition to any collection of felt dolls. If you'd like a doll that stands out from the crowd, this is the one for you. (WR) US$44.00

| | 1960s Evening Dress Gentleman Felt Doll(Reference #5-5-73) Probably made in the 1960s somewhere in Europe, this comic felt doll of a gentleman in evening dress stands 13" tall. His body is built around a wire armature and is stuffed with kapok. His suit is made of felt and is enlivened with braid and beads. His opera cloak is lined with a vivid purple silky material and he holds a cane in his right hand. The gentleman has bead eyes and wool hair; his facial features are also embroidered in wool. The whole effect is crowned by a rather wide-brimmed top hat. In terms of condition, there are absolutely no defects to report. This is an unusual subject for a doll; he would make an imposing addition to any serious collection of felt dolls. (WR) US$44.00
