1970s Finnish Sets of Fairy Tale Boxes (2)(Reference #3-10-433)
Made by Oy Playfair-Products of Helsinki, these two sets of fairy tale boxes are old shop stock and have not been used. Set no 2 is still contained in its original shrink wrapping; set no 1 has only been opened to give an idea of the contents. The sets contain six cardboard cubes (4.75"), the sides of which illustrate various fairy tales, each box illustrating one scene from each story. The complete tale can be illustrated by putting the boxes in the right order. To make it easier to recognise the pictures belonging to the same story, each story has a particular background colour. They are also marked with the numbers one to six. A leaflet gives accompanying text for each scene. Set no 1 tells the tales of Little Red Riding Hood, the Ugly Duckling, Puss-in-Boots, the Three Little Pigs, the Emperor's New Clothes, and the Princess and the Pea. The second set includes Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the Princess and the Swineherd, the Three Little Goats, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and the Woman and the Rabbit's Foot. Both sets suffer from some crushing and tearing to the edges of the boxes, but are in otherwise very good condition. (WR) US$20.00

1930s English Butterfly Brand Soldier Boys Cut-Out Book 1930s English Butterfly Brand Soldier Boys Cut-Out Book(Reference #8-9-258)
Printed in England by Butterfly Brand, this Soldier Boys Wonder Toy-Making Book (8" x 15") is a cut-out book in partially cut condition. However, some of the parts that have been cut are still present. This is an unusual cut-out book in that gummed paper is also provided to paste over the cut-out figures of the various soldiers. The pages are very brittle and are subject to some tearing, but the book is still intact enough to be of interest to cut-out collectors. (WR) US$20.00

1960s Hallmark Bride Cardboard Decoration for Weddings(Reference #94-140)
Made by Hallmark in the 1960s, this 14.5" tall plans-a-party bride centrepiece is still contained in its original packet. The figure is in complete and unused condition with its stand; the flower, the ribbon, and the veil are missing, but could no doubt be fairly easily replaced. The figure is so mint that even the clips at the back of the dress haven't been bent. The original packet suffers from minor tearing to the top where it has been opened, and the bottom flap has come unstuck, but there are no other defects to report. Why not make your wedding reception, breakfast, or shower a wow with this vintage decoration? (WR) US$20.00

1930s Assorted Scenic Postcards (17)(Reference #03-4-01ff)
This lot comprises eight black and white postcards of locations in the UK (Hayling Island, Rottingdean, Waltham Abbey, for example), seven colour postcards of various locations, a novelty Welsh hat postcard of Devil's Bridge with a concertina of 12 small black and white postcards that drop down out of the hat, and a postcard folder containing ten double-sided colour views of Ottowa. The cards are in generally good condition, although some do suffer from minor creasing and tearing. One of the black and white views has an x marking the spot, and the folder suffers from some tearing (the cards are detached) to both the inside and the outside. However, overall, this is an interesting selection that should appeal to someone out there. (WR) US$20.00

Published in 1975 by Thomas Nelson & Sons as part of its Young World series and endorsed by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, this 'punch-out' model and painting book is in unused condition. 1950s Paper and Wood Children's Fans (3)(Reference #3-4-435)
Although it isn't obvious where these children's fans were made, they clearly date from the 1950s; all of them depict humorous holiday scenes. One of them features a typically English seaside scene; the second shows a couple of American tourists being wowed by a display of Spanish flamenco dancing; the third shows children engaged in various holiday pursuits. The first is in excellent condition; the second suffers from minor tearing and creasing, one small hole to the paper, two broken spars, and the lack of a retaining nut; the third one just suffers from the lack of a retaining nut. However, all three would display extremely well as part of a larger collection of paper fans. (WR) US$20.00

1910s Novelty Drinking Sand Picture Postcard 1910s Novelty Drinking Sand Picture Postcard(Reference #94-227)
Measuring 5.5" x 3.5", this two-sided novelty postcard is believed to be English and to date from around 1910. The two pictures depict, on one side, a cheeky monkey filling a bottle with coconut milk and the words 'Play up at 'em, they're all milky'. On the other side, an elephant is drinking the same bottle of milk while a clown looks on'; the words on this side are 'Down with coconut milk'. The pictures are printed different ways up so that the 'milk grains' (sand) can drain into and out of the bottle, depending on which picture is viewed. The card still has its full complement of 'milk grains' and, apart from some wear to the edges, has survived well down the years. The white paper seal to the card's edge is original and is where the sand was originally inserted between the two pictures. The only identification marks on the card are '101' and 'patent no 568 regd'.

Post-war Spanish Boxed Map Picture Blocks(Reference #01-10-24)
Made in Spain, possibly in the early 1950s, this set of boxed picture blocks is unusual in that the blocks are made of cardboard rather than wood. This may be a reflection either of the lack of materials at the period or of the relative poverty of the country of manufacture. The 12 blocks each measure just over 1.5" square and make up into map pictures that measure approximately 5" by 7". The six map pictures are of the five continents plus Spain and Portugal. The set is complete with its five guide pictures and is excellent condition. There is just very minor scuffing to the box lid. This item would make an unusual addition to any collection of picture blocks or map-related memorabilia. (225 *) US$44.00

1920s French Cut-Out Sheet of US WWI Infantry 1920s French Cut-Out Sheet of US WWI Infantry(Reference #4-3-159a)
Printed by Pellerin/Epinal of France in the 1920s, this 11.5" x 15.5" sheet is one of a series featuring the first infantry regiments to arrive in France in 1917. The sheet is made of thin paper because, in those days, you used to paste the sheet onto thin card using a mixture of flour and water, let it dry thoroughly, and then colour and cut the figures out as required. This one depicts American soldiers in various poses - at ease, at the present, at attention, shoulder arms at attention, shoulder arms on the march, standard bearer, drummer, bugler, officer with sword. A few areas of the sheet have been faintly coloured in but, apart from this and some very minor tearing and creasing, it is in very acceptable - and eminently displayable - condition. (WR) US$20.00

Uncut 1950s Cardboard Nursery Rhyme Blocks (Reference #7-1-29)
This Picture Book of Nursery Rhyme Blocks has it all. Not only is it, as the front proclaims, both educational and alphabetical, it also has 16 self-assembly blocks that depict a letter, a number, an object, and words and scenes from a nursery rhyme. The rhymes so depicted are The Little Crooked Man, Jack and Jill, The Cat and the Fiddle, Simple Simon, and Little Boy Blue. Also included in this eight-page pull-out are instructions for assembling the perforated blocks, together with an alphabetical rhyme. This begins with 'A is for apple for mummy to bake, B is for boat to sail on the lake', and ends with 'Y is for youngster, another name for a child, Z is for zebra, so stripy and wild'. The book measures 11" x 7.5"; the blocks must measure 1.5" square. In terms of condition, there is very little to report, apart from some slight grubbiness to the back of the book where the instructions are. This is an unusual and interesting item that would enhance any collection of blocks, paper toys or nursery rhyme memorabilia. (WR) US$20.00

1910s New Year's Eve Fancy Dress Outfit 1910s New Year's Eve Fancy Dress Outfit (Reference #6-5-64)
Undoubtedly made in America and probably dating from the 1910s - the golden age of fancy dress parties - this outfit comprises a cardboard and paper hat to be worn in the halo style of the Statue of Liberty, and a wool felt collar complete with woollen bobbles. Apart from slight tearing to the cardboard rim of the hat that is splendidly decorated with stars, the hat is in very good condition, as is the felt collar. All it suffers from is some discoloration. Why not make a wow at the dawn of the next new by wearing a fancy dress costume that dates from the previous millennium? (WR) US$30.00

Price: £15.00

1903 US Policeman Fancy Dress Outfit (Reference #6-5-63)
Patented on 9 June 1903 and sold by the Hugo Dry Goods Co of St Louis in 1904, this outfit comprises hand-held face mask, tie-on jacket front (7" in width) complete with badge and buttons, and wooden truncheon (15" long). Although it has obviously been worn on a few occasions, perhaps at some riotous New Year's Eve parties, the outfit is still in acceptable condition for its age. The mask has been torn and glued back together at some stage. Apart from that, the damage is confined to creasing across one eye, scuffing and tearing to the edge of the helmet and one small hole. The jacket front has some staining and the cardboard back is torn, but is in generally good condition. The truncheon has clearly been used to apprehend any number of drunken criminals since it suffers from paint loss, minor chipping and cracking, and the loss of some wood from the handle grips. This is a delightful item that would make a wonderful addition to any collection of fancy dress outfits or US police memorabilia. (WR) US$44.00
