1970s English Sutcliffe Boat Club Badge(Reference #06-5-9sb)
On offer here is a tinplate badge indicating that the wearer is a 'member of the Sutcliffe Boat Club'. Measuring 1" in diameter, it must have been available to youngsters who had accumulated a certain number of pressed steel toy boats, made by England's premier toy boat manufacturer, Sutcliffe Pressings Ltd of Leeds. The badge features an image of a boy wearing a captain's hat and is in very good condition. (WR) US$20.00

Made by England's premier toy boat manufacturer, Sutcliffe, in the 1970s, this Jupiter ocean pilot cruiser is in full working order (but please note that a key is not provided). Made of pressed steel, this is one of the standard-sized Sutcliffe boats as it measures 9.5" long. The boat is in very good condition, with the paintwork in good order (apart from some very slight paint loss to the bottom) and all four decals complete and intact. The boat even still has its original radio mast that is detachable. The toy is complete with its original box; this is also in very good shape, just suffering from very minor scuffing. (WR) US$178.00

Made of pressed steel, this is one of the standard-sized Sutcliffe boats as it measures 9.5" long. The boat is in very good condition, with the paintwork in good order (apart from some slight age-related bubbling) and all three decals complete and intact. 1960s English Sutcliffe W/U Hawk Speedboat 1960s English Sutcliffe W/U Hawk Speedboat(Reference #06-5-8)
Made by England's premier toy boat manufacturer, Sutcliffe, in the 1960s, this Hawk speedboat is in full working order (but please note that a key is not provided). Made of pressed steel, this is one of the larger Sutcliffe boats as it measures 12" long. The boat is in very good condition, with the paintwork in good order and both decals complete and intact. There are only two slight blemishes to report: very minor scuffing to the bottom of the boat, and the lack of the pennant at the rear. (#) US$118.00

Price: £59.00

1980s English Boxed Sutcliffe W/U Motor Torpedo Boat(Reference #06-5-4)
Made by Sutcliffe of England from the 1960s onwards, this particular motor torpedo boat was bought in Scarborough in 1981. It is in original condition and complete with its box. Measuring 9" long, it also still has its wire radio mast. The boat itself is in very good condition: there is just some slight bubbling to the pressed steel, and a couple of small marks that look as though they could have been caused by sellotape. However, all the decals are completely intact, and the boat is in full working order (but please note that a key is not provided). The box is not in quite such good condition as the boat. It is taped at one end and suffers from paper loss at the other. Altogether, though, this is an extremely attractive toy and an excellent representation of a motor torpedo boat. Fortunately, no child has ever had the opportunity to put this boat into water, so it is not rusted beyond repair - the fate of all too many Sutcliffe boats. (#) US$190.00

1950s English Boxed Sutcliffe Steel W/U Comet Boat 1950s English Boxed Sutcliffe Steel W/U Comet Boat(Reference #05-10-35)
This 9" long pressed steel and wind-up speedboat 'Comet' was made by Sutcliffe of England from 1955 to 1972. Comet was available either in all yellow or all blue; this is the yellow version. It was probably issued in the immediate post-war period as the boat is contained in a pre-war (1935) ZIP speedboat box that has been over-stamped with the Comet name. Both decals are complete and intact, and the boat still has its plastic bung that prevents water from leaking into the motor. The painting is rather rough but it is clearly the original factory work, and is perhaps a reflection of conditions in the immediate post-war period. There is slight age-related wear to the bottom of the boat, but it is in overall very acceptable condition for its age. The box displays very well from one side, but does suffer from cardboard loss, creasing, and the lack of three end flaps. (*) US$1196.00

1900s German Celluloid Penny Toy Dreadnoughts (2)(Reference #0-9-30a)
On offer here are two celluloid dreadnoughts (3" long), probably made in Germany and dating from the early years of the 20th century. One of the dreadnoughts is in excellent condition, without any cracks of splits, and only suffers from very minor paint loss to the hull. It is complete with its lead weight on the bottom which enables it to remain upright when afloat. The other dreadnought is cracked, split, and lacks some celluloid to the prow, but is included for the sake of completeness as the two boats have been together for such a long time. (WR) US$30.00

1950s English Plastic Boats: Penguin and Kleeware (2) 1950s English Plastic Boats: Penguin and Kleeware (2)(Reference #3-3-48)
On offer here are two English plastic boats, both of which were made in England in the 1950s. The smaller one is a Penguin boat; it measures 6" long and has a wind-up motor, but we do not know whether this works as the motor is misaligned because of slight distortion to the boat. The boat is also slightly cracked and lacks its metal rudder. We think that the larger boat (10" long) was made by Kleeware. It has FIRE PATROL stencilled in silver. As a fire boat, it also has a push-down button for spraying water from the water cannon on the front, but we do not know whether this works. This boat in very attractively moulded and has some delightful detailing, but does suffer from distortion to the front of the hull, probably caused by heat damage. However, as the distortion is only to one side, it would still display perfectly well, as would the Penguin boat. (WR) US$20.00

1960s West German Tin/Plastic W/U Liner(Reference #4-12-128)
Made by Michael Seidel of Western Germany in the 1960s, this splendid tinplate and plastic liner measures a whopping 17" long. It is marked with the company's famous ibex logo, as well as the legend MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY. Called the MS Pacific, the liner has a tinplate hull and main deck with a good quality plastic superstructure. It has a working wind-up motor (but please note that a key is not supplied), with provision for a battery for the two main headlights. However, both the bulb-holders and the bulbs are missing. The boat is in good condition for its age, but the small clip securing the front of the superstructure is broken, and one of the name transfers is missing from one side of the front of the boat. Neither of these minor flaws seriously affects the overall appearance of this impressive toy liner. (J) US$150.00

1960s English Jet Propelled Pop-Pop Boat 1960s English Jet Propelled Pop-Pop Boat(Reference #5-5-162u)
Made in England in the 1960s, this miniature (4.5" long) aluminium pop-pop boat is fuelled by unlighted methylated spirit and claims to provide amusement and educational interest in the study of surface tension. It comes complete with its box, instructions, wick and dropper and will cruise for about 15 minutes at an average speed of 12 feet per minute. The boat is in unplayed with condition; the leaflet is torn at the top edge; the box suffers from slight crushing. (J) US$24.00

1930s Pressed Steel W/U Speedboat with Driver(Reference #01-5-16)
The Parisian firm of JEP was formed in 1932, and was the successor firm to SIF originally founded in 1899. The company continued in business until 1965. It made an impressive range of boats and trains. This delightful JEP 4 speedboat measures 17 inches long and is in full working order, as can be demonstrated by winding the integral key. Sturdily made of pressed steel, the boat is spray painted in red and cream, and features a moveable rudder, windscreen, pennant, headlights, and a particularly attractive driver that brings the boat to life. The boat is in very good condition for a toy of this vintage. The only minor defects to report are the fact that the pennant is loose, and some paint loss and relatively minor denting to the hull. This is an absolutely splendid vintage boat that would grace any serious collection of such toys. (#) US$500.00

Price: £250.00

1920s Japanese Celluloid Dreadnoughts (2) 1920s Japanese Celluloid Dreadnoughts (2)(Reference #02-3-25)
This colourful pair of celluloid dreadnoughts were made in Japan in the 1920s, and measure 4.75" and 3.5" long respectively. They are unmarked, and are in good condition, apart from a split along the bottom seam of the larger battleship. For this reason, the larger ship would no longer float, and must therefore now be confined to land duties. Together, they make a most handsome pair, and would greatly enhance any collection of celluloid novelties. (25 #) US$150.00
