1970s English Jointed Plush Teddy Bear - Possibly Chad Valley 1970s English Jointed Plush Teddy Bear - Possibly Chad Valley(Reference #04-5-110)
This charming 19" tall teddy bear is clearly English and he may have been made by Chad Valley of Birmingham in the 1970s. The reason for this attribution is his nose that is of the typical post-1945 Chad Valley style. The bear is fully jointed, has mohair/synthetic mix plush, original synthetic pads, kapok stuffing, original nose and mouth embroidery (with some signs of over-sewing), and plastic eyes (one of which must be a replacement as they are slightly different colours). The bear is in generally good condition, but does have slight wear to the plush along the centre seam of the front of the body and along the right-hand seam of the head. In addition, one of the plastic eyes is scratched. However, none of these minor defects is serious enough to detract from the overall appeal of this cuddly bear. (#) US$58.00

1970s English Teddy Bears (2) 1970s English Teddy Bears (2)(Reference #05-7-12tb)
This selection comprises two synthetic bears, both of which were made in the UK in the 1970s. Both are of interest, as one is a rattle bear, having two bells in each ear, and the other has elongated legs. The rattle bear (12" long) has jointed limbs, synthetic plush, kapok stuffing, plastic eyes, and embroidered nose and mouth. He is in excellent condition. The long-legged bear has a plastic eyes and nose, felt tongue, plush of a contrasting colour to his forehead and ear inners, and synthetic plush and stuffing. He too is in very good condition. Together, they would make an attractive addition to any collection of vintage bears.

Early 1960s English Pedigree Bear - Bells in Ears(Reference #04-5-47)
Pedigree made this appealing English teddy bear (15.5" tall) in the early 1960s. He has mohair plush with kapok stuffing, glass eyes, an inset muzzle with clipped plush, original velveteen pads, jointed limbs, original nose and mouth embroidery, two original labels (one of which is blank), and a bell in both ears. The bear is in extremely acceptable condition for a soft toy that is 40 years old. There is minor wear to the surface of the pads and slight loss of mohair to various areas of the face. However, these do not detract from his considerable overall appeal. (#) US$150.00

Probably made by Chad Valley of England in the 1960s, this delightful panda measures 12.5" tall. He is made of artificial silk plush, has kapok and woodwool stuffing, glass eyes, a felt nose (a typical Chad Valley feature) and an embroidered mouth. The panda is unjointed, and is so constructed that he sits on his bottom with his tail keeping him in position, with his arms outstretched in an appealing way, as if asking for a hug. He also has a musical chime in his chest which emits a tinkling sound when the panda is picked up. Apart from some minor wear to the plush, the panda is in very good condition. 1991 Steiff Teddy's Watch - Original Packaging 1991 Steiff Teddy's Watch - Original Packaging(Reference #STW)
Produced by Steiff of Germany in 1991, these teddy bear wristwatches with the button in the ear were sold with different coloured straps. This one has a white strap, and is still contained in the remains of its original packaging, although the top and bottom of the tube are sadly missing. The watch is made of metal and glass, and has a Japanese movement. It measures 1.75" from ear to ear. It is not currently in working order, but could probably be restored to full life by a competent clock repairer. In the meantime, it remains an attractive display item from the world's leading bear manufacturer. (WR) US$50.00

1960s English F W Woolworth's Blue Plush Teddy Bear(Reference #02-10-13)
Bears such as this were retailed by F W Woolworth in England in the 1960s and are therefore often known as Woolworth's bears. He is a typical example of a large (29" long) cheaply-made bear of the 1960s. He is made of blue cotton plush (now faded), has woodwool stuffing, plastic eyes, and fully jointed head and limbs. The bear still has his original nose and mouth embroidery, his original red cotton paw pads, and flat ears that are sewn across the facial seams. He has short arms, 'drumstick' legs with large feet, and a working tilt growler. Apart from the fading and some surface grubbiness, this bear is in good condition for his age. He does not appear to have been played with very much after having left the shelves of F W Woolworth. He would make a colourful addition to any collection of vintage bears. (WR) US$170.00

1950s English Sheepskin Bear(Reference #7-12-14b)

This charming example of an English sheepskin bear measures 12" high, and has jointed limbs, glass eyes, and an embroidered nose and mouth. He is stuffed with kapok, and still has his original leatherette foot pads, although one of these has a split in it. 1950s German Teddy Bear Accessory - Satchel & Contents(Reference #8-7-04h)
Formerly on display at the Hamburg Doll Museum, this red plastic satchel would make the most marvellous accessory for a bear of between 10" and 12". In the photograph, it is modelled by a 12" French bear that is not for sale. The satchel measures 3.5" by 2.5" and has two strap notches so that it can be adjusted to suit the girth of your bear. It is complete with its fasteners and contains everything a young bear could possibly need during his first school years. The contents comprise a matching red plastic pencil case with two pencils, a wooden abacus, a miniature slate with sponge and duster attached, two miniature notebooks, a report card, a timetable, and various odd pieces of paper. The previous child owner has written on all the paper material, but only in pencil, so this is hardly serious. In fact, it enhances the overall charm of this absolutely delightful bear prop which is in stunning condition - without any defects to report. If you have a bear that's approaching school age, then don't miss your opportunity to make him the best equipped bear in school. (WR) US$60.00

Charming 1950s Steiff Zotty Sleeping Bear Charming 1950s Steiff Zotty Sleeping Bear(Reference #00-2-9)
Introduced by Steiff in 1951, this zotty sleeping bear derives his name from 'zottig', the German word for 'shaggy'. This example measures 7.5" long and has two-tone mohair plush, kapok stuffing, a clipped muzzle with a shield-shaped nose, and felt eyes, pads and palate. One of the most appealing features of the sleeping bears is the stitch across the felt eyes to indicate that the eyes are closed. This Zotty is in good condition for his age, although he does suffer from some mohair loss to the back of his head, by the central back seam, and to the front of his body. All the felt parts are in excellent condition. (J) US$90.00

Price: £45.00

1960s Steiff Cosy Teddy Bear - Ex-Museum(Reference #8-7-05h)
Steiff first introduced its range of Cosy bears in the 1960s. The design is similar to that of the famous zotty (shaggy) bears. This example is 16" tall, is fully jointed, and is made of Dralon plush which is a brushed, synthetic fabric of German origin. The bear also benefits from glass eyes, original felt paw pads, an inset muzzle of clipped plush, and an open mouth with felt air-brushed palate. Other typical Steiff features are the shield-shaped nose, the long arms with tapering paws, and the large feet. He is in absolutely excellent condition, although he does lack both the Steiff button and tag. He has a particularly appealing face. Perhaps he looks so pleased with himself because he used to be on display at the Hamburg Toy and Doll Museum in Germany and knows that he is a beary distinguished Steiff. (J) US$80.00

1960s English Chiltern Koala Bear 1960s English Chiltern Koala Bear(Reference #6-12-151)
Although this delightful - and rather unusual - representation of a Koala bear lacks his original label, we know that Chiltern made him as we have seen him in that manufacturer's catalogue. Measuring 9.5" high, he is in an appealing seated position with his arms outstretched as if asking for a cuddle. The Koala is made of mohair plush, has woodwool and kapok stuffing, glass eyes, an embroidered nose, and felt claws. He is in very good condition for his age; the only defects to report are slight wear to the plush and the nose, and some loss of felt to the claws. If Koalas are your passion, then don't miss this opportunity. (#) US$30.00

Price: £15.00

1950s French Bear(Reference #02-7-16)
Standing just under 7 inches tall, this 1950s French bear exhibits many of the features that are so typical of bears of that country. He has externally rod-jointed limbs, nose and mouth embroidery in a contrasting colour (pink), and ear inners that are also a different colour. He is made of dark brown cotton plush which is solidly stuffed with woodwool (excelsior), and he has glass eyes. The bear is in very reasonable condition for his age, but does suffer from slight wear to the plush. This is most pronounced to the feet. As his ears appear to be rather small in relation to his head, it is also possible that one original ear has been split into two. Whatever his past history, he is an absolutely delightful little chap that would enhance any collection of furry friends. (J) US$44.00

The bear is endowed with synthetic plush, foam rubber stuffing, jointed limbs, a moulded plastic safety nose, and an inset muzzle. Both the muzzle and the paw pads are of a contrasting colour; this is a typical feature of French bears. This little chap is in splendid condition, with no defects to report. (200 #) US$50.00

Early English Bear(Reference #02-5-63)
Measuring a whopping 24" in height, this fuly jointed early English bear is an absolute delight. With 'sealskin' mohair plush and excelsior stuffing, he has glass eyes, cotton twill pads, an embroidered nose and mouth, and large flat ears. One of his finest features is his very pronounced hump. Other typical features of early bears are the long, curved arms and 'drumstick' legs with shaped feet. The bear has a typical English head with a large forehead and squared muzzle. He suffers from slight overall loss of mohair, as well as relatively minor wear to both paw pads; the foot pads have been sympathetically replaced. Given his advanced years, though, he is in very good condition. He would love to be re-homed with a bear-loving family. (1,450 #) US$790.00

1930s French FADAP Bear(Reference #02-5-4)
Measuring just 11" tall, this FADAP (Fabrication Artistique d'Animaux en Peluche) bear is full of Gallic charm. His plush is of artificial silk, a material first used by FADAP in the 1930s. His head is jointed by the cotter pin and disc method, whereas his limbs use the somewhat cheaper external rod-jointing method. Stuffed with woodwool, he has glass eyes, felt paw pads, curved arms and shaped feet. The bear's upturned nose and downturned mouth are typical features of FADAP bears. Incredibly, after all these years, his squeaker still works. Founded in 1920, FADAP collaborated with the Ideal Toy Corporation of the US in the 1950s, but went out of business in the 1970s. This bear is in excellent condition for his age; the only minor defects to report are some marking to the pads, and very slight wear to the plush. He would add considerable charm to any serious collection of bears. (150 #) US$220.00

1960s French Bear 1960s French Bear(Reference #02-5-49)
Measuring 18" tall, this bear's most outstanding feature is that he can stand on his own two feet, thanks to the fact that his foot pads are reinforced with plywood. This is a feature more typically associated with English bears, particularly those made by Chiltern. The bear is fully jointed, and has synthetic plush, foam rubber stuffing, glass eyes, and large cupped ears. He also has curved arms, shaped feet, and an inset muzzle. His embroidered nose and mouth embroidery is original, and the downturned style of the mouth is typically French, as is the fact that his muzzle and paw pads are of a contrasting colour. The bear is in very good condition with no defects to report. (650 ^) US$90.00

In terms of shape, he has a pronounced square muzzle, curved arms, and 'drumstick' legs with shaped feet. The bear has a somewhat serious facial expression, but he will undoubtedly cheer up as soon as he knows more about his future home. (WR) US$198.00

He has wool plush, excelsior stuffing, plastic eyes and nose, embroidered mouth, red felt tongue, and shaped feet. The bear has a pronounced muzzle that is made of a contrasting material in a contrasting colour; the ear inners are treated in the same way. This is a typical feature of French bears. 1950s Russian Bear(Reference #7-5-192)
Russia has produced both teddy bears and bear novelty toys in the post-war period, perhaps inspired by the popular folklore figure of Mishka the bear. This bear dates from the 1950s and measures 27" tall. Unusually for such a large bear, his foot pads are reinforced with plywood, enabling him to stand on his own two feet. He is fully jointed with cotton plush, excelsior stuffing, glass eyes, and original nose and mouth embroidery in brown cotton. His cotton twill pads are original; the tear-shaped paw pads are a typical feature of Russian bears. In addition, this bear has long arms and 'drumstick' legs with well-defined feet. Other features include large, low-set ears, a broad face gusset, and pronounced muzzle. Apart from some discoloration to the head, this furry fellow from Russia is in very good condition. The original nose and mouth embroidery are sewn onto a pronounced snout of clipped mohair. The bear has curved arms and shaped feet; his original velveteen paw pads are in excellent condition. 1960s French Bear(Reference #7-7-46)
This delightful little (14" tall) bear exhibits many of the classic features of French bears. These include a non-jointed head, externally rod-jointed limbs, no paw pads, and ear inners that are made of a contrasting colour of plush. The bear is made of synthetic plush, has excelsior stuffing, plastic eyes and nose, stubby arms, and slightly shaped feet. His somewhat over-sized eyes are set rather close together; this gives him a particularly appealing look as if he is asking to be taken home with you. He is in very good condition; he just has an area of wear to the plush on the back of his head, behind his left ear. (250 #) US$50.00

Fully articulated, he has golden mohair plush, foam rubber filling, plastic eyes, and nose and mouth embroidery with the typical Pedigree inverted T-shaped mouth. Another typical Pedigree feature is the ears with the inner edges folded in and then sewn into the head seam. The bear has synthetic paw pads, a pointed muzzle, short curved arms, and short legs that nevertheless have some foot definition. He is in absolutely fantastic condition; the only very small defect is the non-operation of his tilt growler. Lines Brothers was founded in the 1850s; started producing soft toys in the 1920s; went out of business in 1988. (WR) US$90.00
